Why do people go see financial advisors?
Either because they like giving people some of their money, or the financial advisor earns their commission. Most financial advisors basically do what you do: They make some investments and then they sit on those investments. Shannon earns her commission. Here are some of the things Shannon's done for us:
- Helped research ETFs/Funds that performed close to average during good years and better than average during the 2008 recession, so we were less impacted by COVID-19 fall out
- Out performed the set-and-forget investments I manage on my own by 8% over a five year period
- Researched ETFs/Funds that met my performance goals AND met my moral criteria (e.g. ethical investing)
- Helped take advantage of market fluctuations to do things like Roth Conversions, and tax loss harvesting in our brokerage accounts
- Been super supportive. Seriously, she's probably more proud and happy of our financial milestones than our parents were about virtually any milestone
If you're going to use a financial advisor, you should definitely use someone like Shannon.
