Very enlightening experience. This school has a very colorful and interesting history, is well funded, and houses some of the brightest students in the state!

NCSSM is the best High School in the nation "In 1980, during Governor Hunt's first administration, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics opened on the grounds of the former Watts Hospital in Durham with 150 high school juniors. It was the first school of its kind -- a public, residential high school welcoming students from across the state to study a specialized curriculum emphasizing science and mathematics but also offering humanities courses, athletics, and extracurricular opportunities."

This is a review for the camps. Our son has loved camps for pre-high school at NCSSM. For kids with a love and aptitude for math and science it is heaven. The camp is somewhat selective as they ask for a teacher recommendation, a student essay and perhaps student records. Camps are one week each and can be day or commuter. My son absolutely loved this camp. The camps fill up early so consider getting on the email list to be alerted for new camps each year.

With first hand experience as a parent of 1 NCSSM graduate and one currently attending in his junior year. I can tell you it's worth the hype. I'm not saying they'll get into a better school, which they will. I am saying they will be a more rounded student, be afforded endless educational opportunities, live in a more diverse environment, live with students that have the same drive as themselves, make lifelong friends, be ready for college on day one. My daughter a freshman in college has seen her friends multiple times since graduation, even with them being scattered across the country. It's a bond that will last a lifetime. For the parents that are considering allowing your children to apply and attend if accepted, don't fear they'll be extremely safe at Smath. Number one school in NC NEED I SAY MORE
