        Slate built a duplex for me in Northwest Charlotte. I went through three men who were my point person over two years as they would quit the company. Brent Zande, the owner, was often very belittling to me as a female owner of the property. He made me feel awful and would respond to me with short, curt answers, often making me feel stupid. There were many problems with the HVAC and grading of the property costing me over $20,000 after the project was complete. When I kindly would explain to Mr. Zande what was going on or ask for help or compensation he would meet me with his typical over the top and intimidating tone. I have heard from men he is nothing like this. As a woman housing developer I would never recommend him. His subs were great and we built the unit in steel. I love the building but I am not a fan of the builder. What could have been the most exciting experience of my career turned into the most stressful because of the owner of Slate. I do not recommend this company.

        Really blown away by their excellent service and quality of work! Not once did I ever have to wonder where we stood on the property renovation. Updates were regular and thorough, and decisions always made on an efficient basis. As an investor, it was incredibly important to stay on budget, and they did just that, without sacrificing quality and efficiency. Looking forward to using this group more!

      Melissa its unfortunate that you feel this way. I honestly tried my best to allow you to feel comfortable with myself and the Slate Team. The first time we heard about an issue with your HVAC on one of the units was right at two years after completion, well outside of warranty and any grading issues that were ours to address were addressed during the warranty period. I know you were disappointed that we would not cover this HVAC but it is telling that the next door unit has had zero problems and was exactly the same. I agree that building during Covid certainly had its challenges and some turnover was a part of that. We feel we managed your project well and the timeline of construction for your project remained on track. We have grown our team since your project with diversity and stability, so I am hopeful that we wouldn't have turnover issues like we experienced during covid. It's good to hear you love the building and that it is serving you well as a rental property.
