Today I got to chaperone a Muddy Sneakers field expedition. It started out as really nice day. The instructors are very engaged with teaching the children and they do it well. This would have been a 5 star review until in our last activity of the day our field leader decided to take a "calculated risk" (her words) and have the kids hike by themselves in solitude to do whatever it is they do in Japanese culture. They got paced so far apart that half of the kids took the wrong fork in the road and ended up separated from the group. Several things are alarming about this. 1. Why would we take a "calculated risk" with children on a school field trip????? and 2. The kids were separated!! Fortunately, myself and the bus driver came up behind them and led them back to the meet up spot where we waited for the rest of the group to finally arrive 10 minutes later. What an embarrassment. The first thing that was discussed in the morning was Safety! And then they forgot about it by the end of the day.... I'm not mad. I am just really disappointed. This could have ended poorly if the kids were in a different part of the trail.
