A wonderful school community, in the truest sense of the word. Kids don't just attend Ed Smith - they BELONG. The majority of the teachers and staff are committed, welcoming and communicative in a way that fosters parent involvement and never sugar-coats the issues. There is a wonderful level of diversity that exists among the student body, that is represented and celebrated in everything the school does. Principal Barber is accessible and even-handed. The PTO works year round to plan some really great events and activities. Ed Smith, despite being faced with many of the same challenges facing the majority of the schools in the district, manages to rally and rise year after year. Couldn't be prouder to be a Coyote parent!

There are some kind and devoted teachers here, but the bad ones get a very long leash. Attempts to hold the bad ones accountable has been met with a " circle the wagons" defensiveness that puts the teacher's career ahead of the children's welfare. Only by involving child services and by doing my own investigation was I able to get the truth after my child was made to do push-ups on a freshly broken arm,( 3 days before), by gym teacher Mr. Chuck Smith. The vice principal Ms. Marshmella Mason continued to lie on his behalf up to the time she was made aware of the fact that the district had named her and Mr. Smith in a letter to me admitting the truth of what had happened and barring her from contact with my son. 4 years previous, only after SCSD became aware of my contacting the ACLU and the NY State Attorney General did they retire and/or transfer 4 administrators who had illegally, and without due process, barred me from school grounds when I made repeated complaints about their failure to follow their own procedures to keep some very young, and in one case special needs, children safe. I still have copies of the letter sent to me by a since-promoted Jaime Alicea barring me from the school grounds, though no letter of apology when it was later admitted that the school had reacted in a retaliatory and illegal way. So.... My advice: Proceed with caution! 1.) Get your kids the same teachers as the kids of the PTO members- they know who is good, and they make sure that their kids get them. 2.) Supplement with Kahn Academy (free) or outside tutoring and enrichment.3.)If you run in to problems, start documenting immediately and involve officials from OUTSIDE the school system, as that seems to be the only way to insure accountability. Good luck!
