Bikes save lives. Bikeatoga put people on bikes. Ergo, Bikeatoga saves lives. (Warning: if you are one of the silly hat wearing, Audi driving, The Bunker-eating Saratogians, probably best to stop reading here.) Too many Saratogians take their cars, jobs, and lives for granted. We do not have good public transit here; the hours and routes are limited and not everyone has the cash for the fare. Sometimes, the job someone can get who is rebuilding their life is not along a bus route. Sometimes that person doesn't have a car, can't get rides from friends and family, or simply has a good reason not to drive. Should this person be forced to accept that they don't live in a well-planned, walkable city that doesn't neglect its impoverished and just surrender to poverty? While we can't change how Saratoga has gentrified; we can't get rid of the silly hats or the faces the wealthy make at the poor; we can't make the city look out for the poor and provide better public transit options (they cater to the silly hat people); we CAN improve our situations. That's where Bikeatoga comes in. A bike can be the difference between not having a job, home, or support system and being an upwardly mobile individual with options, a hobby/skill, HOPE, and freedom. A bike can get you where our woefully inadequate public transit cannot. A bike can teach you maintenance, repair, and PRIDE. Who takes care of that bike, who locks it up and keeps it safe, who rides it to and from their job everyday? YOU do and you should be proud of that. For some, a bike is the first notable thing a person has to their name. For others, a bike is a memory from childhood. A bike can symbolize and make available so much of the world. The bike truly embodies freedom and Bikeatoga makes that freedom available to people who don't use "summer" as a verb leaving their Saratoga behind, allthewhile complaining about the burden people experiencing homelessness or addiction create on our society. If you're one of those people and you're still reading... Give cyclists the right of way. Noone deserves to die under a white BMW 5 series with Jersey plates, operated by silly hat person.
