Unprofessional. Dr. Russo told me that he would recommend surgery for removing my dad's benign tumor because for his age he is healthy and the risk for surgery was low. He said most people his age he would "let rot" as they may not be able to survive surgery. This was disturbing phrasing to hear from a doctor. We did not end up going forward with surgery but retested and revisited Dr. Russo one year later. A year later (forgetting about his initial recommendation or "rotting" comment), he told my dad and I that because of his age the risk of surgery was too high. I haven't since been able to get his words out of my head that he is just letting him "rot." That being said we are looking for a new doctor to monitor the tumor.

Paul russo is a godsend ! back in april I saw my local urologist in new jersey for some discomfort I was having on my right side. I went for an ultrasound and an abnormality was present . I went for further testing and turned out I had a large lesion on my right kidney. spoke with one kidney surgeon that said i’m going to have to get surgery to remove mass and kidney. wasn’t the best thing to hear losing a kidney but I started to feel good about things . I felt good because I was mislead and told that due to the tumors size it looked like a stage 1-2 kidney cancer situation . however I decided to go get a second opinion with Dr Paul russo whom was referred to me by a friend. Dr Russos assessment unfortunately was a little more bleak . he said because of the tumors location it was possibly stage 3. I was upset as was my father whom took me to russo . but doctor russo assured me that i’m going to be just fine . he scheduled me for surgery a few weeks later . I had a radical nephrectomy done of my right kidney. painful yes , recovery difficult . but thanks to doctor russo I am here , alive , healthy and as horrible as it was being diagnosed with cancer it was doctor russos attitude, knowledge, expertise and compassion that got me through a very tough time .

Dr Russo operated on my husband twice in 1999 and 2000 for undetected cancer that had spread throughout his lymph system. He saved his life. We could not say how grateful we are to his expertise and amazing kindness to us.

Dr. Russo is the definitely the expert in the field of kidney cancer surgery. When we first met him for a consult, his first priority was to understand you as an individual, and second was to share his knowledge about kidney cancer. He is clearly a visionary and is passionate absolutely about anything to do with kidney cancer. We are so thankful that he did my husband’s surgery! He is absolutely the best in kidney cancer surgery!

About
Paul Russo, MD, FACS - MSK Urologic Surgeon

I am a urologic oncological surgeon known for my academic work in kidney tumor surgery. My expertise includes partial nephrectomy, removing only the tumor using small “miniflank” incisions while preserving maximal kidney function, and cytoreductive radical nephrectomy for patients with advanced kidney cancers. I also lead a kidney tumor surgical research team at Memorial Sloan Kettering that has created nomograms predicting survival and renal functional outcomes.
