Dr. Kurian is a great doctor/surgeon. In addtion, she is personable and caring and will help you reach your goals. I don't think I would have maintain a 80 pound weight loss for 17 years without her support.

I think Dr. Kurian is an excellent surgeon. The reason I gave her four rather than five stars is that I feel she does not provide enough support services pre and post op. She has an amazing nurse practitioner who underwent gastric bypass surgery five years ago and is kind and knowledgeable. However, the NP works only one day a week with the practice. Generally, patients pre-op might speak with the NP briefly once a month for several months and a few times after surgery. Dr.Kurian has been responsive post-op. Both times that I called the office and asked that she call me, she called me back the same day and spoke to me briefly. The fact that Dr. Kurian is essentially a stand-alone surgeon means there is much less bureaucracy than with surgeons who are part of a hospital bariatrics program. But there is also much less support. I did not feel I was adequately prepared for life after surgery. The scheduled sessions were too far apart to help with all the day to day questions. It happens I healed well and quickly, which I attribute to Dr. Kurian's skill as a surgeon. However, this general lack of support would have made it much harder if I had not healed as easily. Dr. Kurian does provide access to a once a month Zoom group run by a social worker who herself underwent bariatric surgery some time back. I attended twice. The focus of the group seems to be recidivism - people who've fallen off the wagon. It wasn't helpful to a newbie. Perhaps a monthly group for post op newbies would be a great addition. It would be fantastic if Dr. Kurian would consider adding to her practice another healthcare provider deeply experienced in bariatric medicine - perhaps a licensed RD nutritionist with a bariatrics speciality. This person might be delegated to answer patients' specific questions and issues regarding diet and weight loss after surgery and to run a biweekly or monthly support group.
