A case of terrible vertigo was completely cured at this wonderful hospital. They are thorough, professional, and kind and we can't say enough about them. Five stars to Santosh Krishnamoorthy, PT, DPT, MS Physical Therapist/Clinical Instructor in the Vestibular Rehabilitation Department at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. He is simply the BEST.

My doctor only sent me here because they take my insurance. His preferred alternative is NYHD Institute for Hearing & Balance on E 56th St. and now I understand why. I had an awful experience here: 1. They induced a full blown panic attack like I never had before. While this may have occurred even if they had adequately prepared me for this part of the test, because they told me only that cold or hot air would be blown into my ears, omitting that it would be at hurricane speed, my experience was extra startling and unpleasant. If you're considering a VNG test, please know that having high speed air blown into a sensitive organ is an extremely unpleasant sensation that can cause more than just "dizziness or vomiting in 1% of cases." You may experience a panic attack. 2. The doctor supervising the test did not seem to understand from either observing me, or from my words describing what I was experiencing, that proceeding with the test was simply not an option thus not something I could choose to do as much I also wanted to complete the test as prescribed. They kept trying to talk me into continuing, saying things like "this is the most important part of the test" (it wasn't, as I found out from my referring doctor afterwards), and when I asked if there was an alternative way of carrying out this part of the test they said yes but that would require them contacting my referring physician, which clearly seemed to be an unwelcome option for them, far less preferable to watching me sob uncontrollably. 3. The complaint process about this incident entailed them asking me to recount the above ordeal three times, to three different people there, none of whom said what I experienced was not right, this should not have happened here, as well as pointing out that my test started late and that the supervising physician may have felt rushed to get to her next patient (don't be late to your appointment or the panic attack you experience will be your fault). No one offered a meaningful apology or showed any compassion aside from the staff administering the test briefly squeezing my hands. I received the pitiful nonapology "I'm sorry you feel that way," an excited "hey I went to school with [your referring physician]!" (like that makes this better?), and "we'll talk to [the doctor supervising the test]" (giving me the impression they'd then contact me with the results of their investigation). 4. Of course I never heard from them again. They seem to have concluded that everything went according to their protocol, test and complaint process included. I understood from the above that both poor patient care and meaningless complaint process are exactly what is to be expected here.
