I took private lessons with the instructor of Megami Dojo. I have hopped around other martial arts schools but nobody else can compare. His depth of knowledge is outstanding and he does the class with the students, so you know he's actually good. I am 6'0 and 240 lbs, he is not very big but he throws me around. I've also never seen someone who can punch as hard as he can. He is really passionate about martial arts and it shows!

I trained with the head Sensei of Megami Dojo for about a year in Manhattan before he moved his dojo to LIC. His detailed understanding of the martial arts is nothing short of impressive. Every single technique he teaches, he knows the exact position of the muscles to make the technique as effective as possible. But it's not like most martial arts schools where the teacher says it's true and therefore it's true! He is able to demonstrate empirically why the technique is superior to common techniques taught in other styles. And he doesn't show you with his own technique, he makes the student try it and prove it to themselves. As a practicing engineer, I can confirm he has a scientific mindset, he is more interested in scientifically and experimentally determining the best techniques in the martial arts than any other instructor you will find. That's not even to speak of his actual skill...he doesn't look like it but his techniques are fast and powerful, it's really quite incredible. I've trained with other instructors in the past who would stand around and boss the class, it always made me question if those teachers were actually good. With Sensei, there is no doubt left in any student's mind. In terms of what this school offers, Sensei is really focused on "street" self defense. It's definitely not a place for competitive martial arts, though I have occasionally seen "walk-in" students who are looking to learn something to improve their competition techniques. Training with Sensei is one of the best things I ever did for myself. My only regret is that he relocated to LIC which makes the commute impossible for me. If I ever move and find myself closer to his dojo I would sign back up in a heartbeat.
