SMART Local 71

Honestly I can't say enough great things about local 71 sheet metal union. I worked non union as a architectural worker for 9 years. I was offered to join the apprenticeship. I would be taking a pay cut the first year. But after that what they offer everyone is amazing. Every sheet metal apprentice has to go to school for 4 hrs a day two times a week for 6 months each year. While working. If you get below a 65 avrage your removed from the apprenticeship. So you get good workers. With 5 years of training and work experience so that when you have completed the apprenticeship you are ready to take on anything a company ask you to do. In addition every year you pass in may you get your raise and it's not no dollar a hr. Apprentices start somewhere around 18$ a hour but right now after the 5 year program they get 35.50 per hr plus great health benefits two pensions that's right I said two a local and international also a 401a also known as a annuity plus a vacation fund. In Buffalo that is a pretty nice set up. Also no student debt at all. And for any reason you want to move to a different city just switch locals. Across the board the package is the same give or take a few bucks per hr head to Washington they get 48.00 a hour but cost of living im sure is much higher than in Buffalo. But if your not sure what to do and you work with metal in my eyes it gets no better. Hopefully the people reading this I will one day call my Brother or Sister in the trade. Owe its been 15 years in the trade as of this year so take it from someone who came from the non union side. The union changed my family's life. And I thank them for that.

I work for this trade I really don't have anything bad to say it's a perfect trade for upcoming young individual any gender willing to learn a skill set and find out about their inner talents
