image I left sankofa aban happier then when I checked in! A wonderful place to stay that is lovely to come back to after days exploring NYC. Eric and Debbie are so kind and insightful and youll feel lucky to be around them. I felt so safe and comfortable being young and travelling alone. On top of everything the jazz is unreal!! I recommend endlessly

image When I first met Debbie, the hostess, she promised a "true New York City living experience," and that is exactly what I got. She and Eric knew so much history about the neighborhood and treated me like a member of the family. Between that and the amazing jazz shows, when I stayed at Sankofa Aban, they made it feel like I was helping preserve this amazing history. So glad I stayed here instead of a hotel!

image My partner and I stayed here in May for a wedding and this was the most fun I've ever had staying in NY. The building is a cozy original brownstone so the space was incredibly unique. The hostess, Debbie, was so welcoming and kind. It felt like I was staying at a close friends house. We had the top floor room and luckily we luckily had good weather so no need for a heater or the AC. It was a surprisingly quiet room for a city and I've lived in many cities. There's so many places around for breakfast and you are very close to the subway so it's easy to navigate the city.
The cherry on top was the Jazz nights, on Friday and Saturday. It's the best live Jazz I've ever heard and the musicians seem to be dear friends of Debbie, adding to the special history of the home. I'd love to stay again, it was such a unique, special and quintessentially New York experience.

image The location is in dire need of repair. There is NO ac in the room. We specifically called and spoke to the owner Debbie before our stay who stated and I quote, "Oh no we have air" Well the owner might have ac but the guests don't. The rooms have no keys and you are forced to leave your room unlocked when you go out. There is no where to put anything in the room. Every area that could hold something has a nick knack on it. We had to set our things on the floor. Everything has an inch of dust on it. We left after one night. The shower handle didn't work correctly (it fell off in our hand). The bedroom handle didn't work right either. Basically it was hot, loud, and dirty. The noise came from having to leave the windows open due to no ac. The good news is NYC was in a heat wave and the humidity was 95%. We couldn't close our window or we would die from heat exhaustion. The owner touts the property as historical and says things like, "welcome to the 1900's!" That is a true statement. In fact I felt like I was on the Oregon Trail. My only solace was bed bugs most likely can't survive in that kind of heat environment. There is NO WAY the owners don't know what they are doing to people. Well lesson learned. For all of the folks who put good reviews on here you either 1 didn't stay here, 2 are insane, or 3 (my guess) the reviews are made up. I'm 51 and have travelled the world and this is the first time I've had to leave a reservation because it was so far from what was advertised that I simply couldn't stay. It was like camping without a tent in the dirt. Buyer beware.
