CasaDeVida Pharmacy

Today I picked up a prescription at this location. This was on a friends behalf. The pharmacy was called by the patient in advance. They provided confirmation regarding the exchange. When I got to the pharmacy, I was told by your cashier that I could not receive a consultation for the medications. We later found out that not all of the prescriptions were provided as well. Specifically, Biktarvy a lifesaving ART that is influenced by consistent uptake was not provided. The reason given for this discrepancy was a potential "HIPPA violation". According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, (https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professionals/faq/disclosures-to-family-and-friends/index.html) friends and family members can receive information about prescriptions they have been tasked with collecting on behalf of someone else. Based on this, I have to ask the obvious question. What was it about me, that prompted subpar service from the cashier? My hope, going forward is that "Casa De Vida" treats all of its customers equitably regardless of presentation. I would also suggest some sensitivity trainings for staff members, as it was clear that this interaction was fueled by bias. Further the staff could benefit from understanding the theoretical framework and implementation of HIPPA laws before engaging with customers. Thank you.
