Sadly, we were disappointed with our last visit to Moro's Table. The waiter was serving too many tables to be attentive to us. The food needed more flavor to encourage more bites. The apple fritter dessert with ice cream and whipped cream was the star. We will take a break from Moro's for a while.

Moro's Table is a regular on our dining rotation, but may get slotted more frequently after trying the week's special "polpo". The octopus appetizer was perfectly cooked to a sublime tenderness, grilled, and served with asiago potato slices and an ancho-guajillo sauce. It brought us back a few nights later for a second go-around, and our guests, new to octopus, raved as well. Dinner on our first visit include seared scallops, perfectly cooked and plump and flavorful, and on our second visit pan-seared sablefish and a medium-rare ribeye. Chef Ryan is doing a wonderful job in the kitchen, and all of our menu items and specials have been delicious. We were fortunate to have Josh as our server, and our bartender. The Sidecars were delicious, and his dinner suggestions a hit. If you've never tried grilled octopus, this is the place to try it. We're hoping it finds its way onto the regular menu. Their legendary braised beef short ribs are an easy "go to", but the specials are at least as compelling.

Some years ago, chef Ed Moro put the Mirbeau Spa restaurant on the map before opening his own establishment, Moro's Table, in Auburn NY, about a 40-minute drive from downtown Syracuse. On a good night, the restaurant ranks among the best in the area and is well worth the drive. Unfortunately, we recently discovered that consistency in the preparation of menu items can be a problem, so my rating was adjusted downward by 1 star. As a starter, I recommend their house salad with miso ginger dressing. As an entree, try the strip steak or whatever steak they have as a special. The wine list is not strong, but the cocktails are good. Service is always excellent, and the ambience is conducive to an enjoyable evening meal with friends. UPDATE-1: We returned to this restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday. Our guest enjoyed an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, while my wife and I enjoyed an order of mussels and a garden salad with miso ginger dressing. Our guest and my wife were not so fortunate in their choice of a main course. They ordered the pan seared scallops which were a variation from the regular menu item in that the five scallops were set over corn risotto. This dish paled in comparison to my grilled beef tenderloin. I gave them each a quarter of my steak and they thought it was spectacular, as did I. It came with delicious carrots and al dente brussel sprouts, and I requested french fries in place of the mashed potatoes.
