We stayed here for 2 weeks while we were packing to move out of portales. Owners were very attentive and always had a smile on their face, yeah the rooms could use an update but for the price it's alright!!

I should have known better since there's a sign over the reception desk that says "all sales final- no refunds." Oh my goodness- I agree with another reviewer, the rooms need to be burnt! The location was great (we were attending a workshop at the university and it couldn't have been more convenient). The service was good as we thought the heater wasn't working and the manager came right away to work on it. Additionally, they take pets (that's why we ended up there- most of the hotels in town don't take pets, even with a deposit). BUT- we're no snobs, but the rooms were truly the filthiest we'd ever been in. It was supposedly non-smoking but (1) the smoke smell was so bad it gave me a headache and (2) the polyester quilt was absolutely riddled with hard, crusty cigarette burns. We checked for bedbugs (always since a friend came home from Carlsbad with an infestation that took them 7 months to get rid of). There weren't any, but the stains on the mattress were so disgusting that (luckily we had brought sleeping bags just in case we decided to rough it and camp) I made my kids sleep on top of the beds in the bags. There were even leftover food crumbs on the bed from the previous tenant! I wouldn't let anyone walk on the carpet without shoes on as it was just dark and filthy with grease. There were disgusting mysterious smears of who knows what (mucous? blood? feces?) on the walls, the doors, the curtains. There was significant water damage to the walls and floor in one corner of the room. The heater banged so loud every half hour, it sounded like a car backfiring in the room. Just out of curiosity, before we left in the morning, the kids opened the refrigerator- mistake. There wasn't any food in it, but it was still covered with old hardened spills and bits of food everywhere and it reeked. The tub was so gross, we didn't even use it to wash the grime of the room off ourselves. We shudder every time we think of the place now!

Zero stars. BED BUGS, black mold, no cold water, not safe area, broken heaters, four TV channels, stray animals, constant trains, constant traffic, airplanes, near a college, loud. I can keep going but I won't, I'm done. Burn it down. The one star goes to Paul the maintenance man who looked out for us. Safety: No.
