Stevens Cooperative School - Garden Street

Progressive Education. Community Oriented School which we are passionate about - that's Stevens. My son has been going to Stevens since the 2's. Everyday he happily goes to school and has a passion for learning.  Can't wish for more... He is currently an 8th Grader and is receiving great support for the high school applications. Obviously this school is not perfect, and no school can or will be, but Stevens is constantly adapting and listenning as a community, that's what matters to our family. My son learns about transparency and about growth within the school. He is a happy kid, learning in a safe environment. I have to say, as a family, in the Stevens community, we are all happy here.

A 70-year old bastion of progressive education with excellent teachers and facilities in Hoboken and Jersey City. From the outside, their Jersey city campus may seem small, but it extends all the way to the Hudson river and has all required amenities including an auditorium inside. I also like the fact that they are adding in more academic rigor by, for example, introducing Singapore Math at a very early level. There are 2 issues that I have with this school, the first being that there is a lot of parent involvement required in a cooperative school system leading to many requests for contribution of time or money. Also, Sergio Alati, head of School needs to tone down his attitude. The very high retention rate that Stevens has (he says it is the highest among NJ private schools) is probably what makes him so smug and arrogant. On a separate note, I am surprised by the review from Mike below complaining about the penalty for breaking a contract. When you willingly sign a contract, as a responsible adult you have to honor the terms. They went to court against the school and the school won.
