I was referred to the Matakas BJJ Academy by a personal trainer whose recommendations I consider to be well informed and of a major value. I learned very early that Matakas BJJ is a genuine community. Each student takes some meaaure of responsibility for the teaching of each other. It is extremely helpful that the advanced students regularly and eagerly attend the "all-levels" classes. It benefits the less experienced members to work with them and it gives the advanced members an opportunity to return to the basics.

Even though I've moved on from this academy, it has honestly become a benchmark for caliber of instruction. Chris keeps up on the most up to date techniques while keeping an eye on the hard nosed Gracie basics that made the art famous. He has a complete skill set. While both passing and playing guard he exhibits the characteristics of a world class player. His nogi perspective is one of total comprehension of position and pace while keeping focus on temp and timing. If you have a good temperament for sports and wish to really be educated this is an amazing place to start or finish. His classes more resemble a lecture style set up rather than tradition bjj classes. He really makes an attempt at giving you something properly curated rather than thrown together. 10 out of ten
