I have brought my 3 yorkies to Petco their whole lives for grooming. I have age 7, 5 and 2 year old yorkies. In September of 2023 I brought all 3 in for their normal 6 week haircut, bath and nail trim. At some point while under Petco's care, my oldest yorkie Liv, had her neck broken. She walked into her appointment and never walked out. I asked immediately once I saw her if anything happened during her appointment out of the ordinary and was told everything went routinely. When I questioned why she wasn't able to walk, they recommended I bring her to my veterinarian and let them know the outcome. I waited a week to see if maybe her nails were just trimmed too short and her walking would get better with time and rest. After I saw a rapid decline in her, I made an appointment with our veterinarian who took x-ray's to rule out a broken paw. On the x-ray the veterinarian noted no issues with her paw but saw her liver was enlarged so they sent us to the emergency vet in Portsmouth for an ultrasound. The emergency vet wasn't very concerned about her liver. They were however concerned that she may have something neurological going on and referred us to a neurologist in Scarborough which is 45 minutes from where I live. While we waited for this appointment with the specialist, my 5 lb yorkie continued to decline. She stopped breathing and we were off to Portsmouth again in the middle of the night where they sent us home saying she probably had pneumonia with an antibiotic. I was able to get her breathing again during the car ride there by raking my knuckles across her ribs and blowing in her snout. I insisted that they show me how to perform CPR and 4 hours later we were in the car on our way to Scarborough on an emergency basis. I performed CPR during our terrifying ride and Liv was admitted for a sedated airway exam and x-rays. The airway exam and x-rays confirmed that Liv had a broken neck and that her vertebrae had punctured her spinal cord causing paralysis of her airway permanently. She underwent a tie back surgery to open her airway and a spine surgery which was extremely risky due to her size at just 5 lbs. She spent 5 nights in the ICU in an oxygen chamber. They saved her life and I am eternally grateful. We spent a total of $40,000 to keep her alive and she is still struggling today. We don't know what the future holds for her currently as we have a 6 month follow up which she will get put under for in April 2024. I informed Petco of all of her medical complications and they investigated if they were at fault for somewhere between 2-3 months. Just yesterday I received a letter saying that they determined they were not at fault for her injuries, what a surprise. There are no cameras in the grooming room so I naturally cannot prove that they broke her neck, but anyone could piece together the puzzle. She walked into her appointment and never walked again. While I might not get monetary reimbursement, I'm hoping that I can spare another fur baby from the same misfortune. Our experience has compelled me to try to warn as many people as I can. Buy your pet supplies from a local business that cares about you and your pet, not a large box store that can't even apologize for a life changing mistake.
