Micromanaging is a big problem at MassMedia. The majority of my time employed there (1 and 1/2 months), I was forced to produce work (content and copy) that the Digital Marketing Management wanted, leaving no creativity and trust in me to bring my knowledge and do my job. I was constantly being critiqued for my work (which really was the work they asked of me) in its draft form. I was talked down upon for not constantly overly communicating with colleagues for materials I needed from them, though I asked daily and would wait for days on end before receiving them. MassMedia glorifies working 60-hour work weeks and encourages you to do the same. When I was constantly being asked to work after hours and post live on their client's social channels every weekend, I explained my boundaries to management and put my Workplace Chat on Do Not Disturb outside of office hours. This was a big no-no to a company that wants to overwork you to your breaking point and ultimately led them to offer me what seemed to be a plea deal, a freelance contract position with 3x less the pay, with the reasoning being, "You aren't a good fit." When I denied the contractor position and requested HR for documents supporting my termination, the reason was changed to "performance issues," and HR emailed me a performance review I had never seen before, let alone agreed with/signed. If I had performance issues, why was I being offered a contractor role within the company? The company does not value fresh and creative thoughts and ideas which is why they are shrinking and not growing. I would not recommend working or interning here.
