Our 4 year old son was referred to Dr. Akers by our Pediatritian. We were desperate for help with his outbursts, violent tantrums and screaming. Having 2 other children we knew something was wrong. We were immediately dismissed by Dr Akers, told he was too young for any type of diagnosis. He offered no help to us, and his suggestion was to use star charts and a reward system.
We obviously got another opinion, and he was started in therapy. Fast forward a few years and his therapist said she suspected he was autistic. We caught an evaluation with a highly respected child psychologist and he was diagnosed with severe ADHD and level 2 Autism. After years of intense therapy, behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and medication management we have a highly intelligent 13 year old that is able to communicate effectively. Dr. Akers, I would suggest you look deeper into childrens behavioral issues and not just dismiss concerns. Im glad we got another opinion, I cant imagine if we just tried using your suggestions (which by the way we told you we had already been doing for quite some time) where my son would be right now. I hope you can take this constructive criticism and do better for children in the area. Parents are desperate for help, and quite honestly you completely failed our son.
