The Spire is my happy place. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The facility is clean, safe, and well run. The staff are universally friendly, polite, and professional (enough, but also easy-going and flexible,) and are, generally, extremely knowledgeable. The setters are genius. There's a great mixture of grades, styles, and challenges, but more than that, they use the routes to teach you something. Maybe one it's heel hooks, other it's compression, a third it's body position, and not in a heavy handed, repetitive way, more theme and variation. My friend today chose a particular warm up route because she liked the flow. I said I liked how secure it all get, like you could free solo it, and she said, "yeah, it makes me feel like I'm dancing." Which brings me to the vibe of the place. It's awesome. You will see some world class climbers here, but you will also see them giving high fives to the beginner who just conquered their very first V2. Everyone is so supportive and friendly you should go there whether you're a hard core comp climber just passing through, or a complete beginner with a four year old in tow. Good times will be had by all.

Meh. Clean facility n such. This place has great potential, but It could cater to its audience a bit better. We were there for about 4 hours and only saw one group lead climbing- while the toprope and bouldering areas were packed. About 70% of the ropes climbing area is only for leading and it was all desolate. Maybe open the gym up a bit more for everyone by adding more top ropes??? I know theres tons of new climbers in the area, as this is a college town- make it more accessible!! Dont get me wrong, lead climbing is wonderful and deserves a good chunk of a gym- but as folks that are just passing through for the day, we didnt want to jump through the hoops to get the lead test because they force you to take the toprope and auto belay test first?? As if someone who is ready for a lead test cant clip themselves into an auto belay? I get it doesnt take very long, but for people just getting a day pass, it feels like a huge inconvenience. Lastly, the bouldering overall has good setting, but maybe consider not putting the crux at the top of so many problems? Some of the boulder problems could be considered highballs and can just straight up be too dangerous for a gym. anyways- great gym at its core but could definitely benefit from some more accessible expansion into the lead areas.

Hi Eric! Thanks for the constructive feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed your time and put some thought into helping us make the gym a better place. We are always looking to improve. Yes, our Main Facility does feature a significant amount of lead climbing (about 45% lead climbing and 55% top rope and autobelay) and we feel this does cater to our community. In the summer months, a majority of our experienced climbers venture outside to get their lead climbing fill. This could account for the lack of folks on the lead walls. While there is space to add a few top ropes to the edges of the lead area, the steepness of the walls in the middle limits the use of a top rope due to safety concerns – folks would swing out away from the wall. Next time, be sure to check out our Training Center – bouldering only! Our thorough proficiency tests also stem from a place of safety. We treat our autobelay, top rope, and lead testing policy as a tiered system. One must be completed before the other. The autobelay orientation is just that, and we take it as an opportunity to highlight the risk involved with that activity and make sure all our participants understand our specific system for operating the autobelays, as they do differ between climbing facilities, nationwide. The top rope assessment allows us to get to know the customer better and build a sense of trust before moving on to the lead test. Many of the foundational principles of a good lead belayer can be identified in a good top rope belayer. Lastly, our lead test is thorough, though, not meant to be an inconvenience. We take pride in a community that can lead by example and hold all our customers to a high standard set forth by the Climbing Wall Association’s guidelines for belaying. If you have specific boulder problems in mind that you feel are unnecessarily risky, we’d love to know which ones so we can make proper adjustments. Our setters always try to consider the potential dangers of a high fall, while also knowing that falling is an integral part of bouldering. If you'd like, drop us an email at [email protected] We appreciate your shared concern. Thank you for the feedback and time!CharlieOperations Manager
