Dr. Harkins left early and after driving 5 hours round trip, I was unable to be seen for my consultation. He had all of my records and knew I had a life-threatening condition and chose to leave early in spite of that. 4 of our family members had seen him so we had anxiously awaited the appointment. Weeks in advance, we called our insurance company to ensure he was "in network". He was. Once we arrived (30 minutes prior to appointment time), we were told by the clinic that he was "in network" but they billed as a group instead of individual so we would have to cash pay if we saw him. We stepped outside to call the insurance company to try to resolve the issue. We came back in twice to have the ins. representative speak to the office staff since our ins. co. was still insisting the office was "in network". Once we decided to just cash pay (it was a life-threatening condition, we'd both taken time off work and driven 5 hours), they told us that their "wait policy was 15 minutes but that he'd waited 30 to see what we decided to do. He has now left the building". They could all see us outside the door speaking on the phone to resolve this issue. We felt this was heartless and poor patient care. We were left in despair to drive home to start over from scratch finding a new provider/group in the state after waiting 2 weeks to be seen. I work in health care and feel it is terrible to decide to leave early on a day when a patient is standing outside frantically trying to fix an issue that we had no control over.
