I've lived at this residence for over 2 years, so I have plenty to say about this company and a bit about the caretaker. Let's start with the fact that $850 was stolen from my initial deposit, when I moved out, with not much legitimate reasoning. I've only tried to wash my clothes once in my building, in 2 years. They dryers did not function, had no sign and ate my money. I called the company office, left a message -- no response... Upstairs in my apartment, the electricity blew out a few times. I made a report through the online service -- no response. I had to run into the building caretaker to get any maintenance to come look at it (she has no email). The building itself is old -- and not in a charming way. Old floors, appliances etc. I found it hard to justify the rent increase of almost $100 when the only real "amenity" was the location. Paper thin walls: you can hear everything: obnoxious laughing, singing, making out, music, whatever neighbors are watching on TV and stomping upstairs. I had a leak under my kitchen sink for a year and a half. It was good this was noted and a building-wide leak inspection happened. I even made signs, in my apartment, that pointed to the source of the leak. Unfortunately, they came in (while I was at work) and literally fixed nothing. 3 days later, they gave short notice to enter my apartment again (while I'm at work). Again, nothing was accomplished. I couldn't be bothered to put up a fight; I put a bucket under my sink for the rest of the year. At various points during the year, the halls smelled like weed and fish. Just imagine that combination, together. The light fixture in my living room was never fixed. Mind you, I am not one to openly complain. I kept to myself, took these inconveniences in stride and found workarounds. I knew I would be moving on at some point. However, moving out was the worst of the whole experience... Due to a job situation, I had to move out at the end of the month (the company was given about a month's notice which, in my opinion, is still substantial, but they wanted more). I was coldly told that, since my notice was so late I would be obligated to pay for up to 2 months of rent AFTER I left. Basically, I would have to pay a few thousands to live in two places at once. The caretaker + staff + portfolio manager were not accommodating at all -- not interested in my good track record as a tenant, the great condition of the unit or, most importantly, the circumstances surrounding why I gave "short notice" of my leave. Finally: the move out inspection. I spent a few hours cleaning my apartment (it was already decent), especially the floors, baseboards, bathroom and fridge (I did this over several days throughout the month). The caretaker came upstairs, with a bucket and cleaning products in hand, and proceeded to nickel and dime every possible thing she could find (or make up). It felt like I was in a movie. The way she swiped up dust with her fingers and held it to my face. "See this? Look at this! This is dirty." She climbed counters, craning her neck to see above the shelves. Blamed me for not doing anything about the leak under the sink. She scraped her fingers along the baseboard and said, "Yep, dirty." I said, "Weird, because I made sure to clean that well, there shouldn't be any dirt." She replied, "Oh, well, maybe I need to wash my hands. Let me try again." She wet a paper towel and scrubbed desperately, trying to pull up any bit of dust. She could not. "Hm," she grunted. "Not bad." I agreed that the oven and windows could've used more cleaning (in my defense, I didn't know these areas could detach). She said the last tenants were charged a cleaning fee of over $100 (which sounds right, as they were 2 messy men). Actually, I (as a single, clean man) was charged more than them at $150! That is worth a professional cleaning company cleaning for 3.3 hours, which implies that I left the place a wreck! This is what I imagine getting robbed feels like. In short, would I support living at any of KRC's properties: no.
