My Mother was there 8 days. She has multiple health concerns including needing oxygen 24 hours a day and a bipap machine anytime she is going to sleep. Overall she has a positive outlook and tries to focus on the good. By the third day she was telling me she felt unsafe and wanted to get out of there. She said she would rather lay on her couch with no help than be there. She had been at another facility before and although she mentioned wanting to go home, she never said she felt unsafe. More than once her oxygen tank had run empty when I was on the phone with her. This should not happen. She is 75 and in poor health and should not have to remember for herself to check on her oxygen tank levels or ask to have someone connect her concentrator. A few days in she was having trouble and said she felt like she needed to go to the hospital. My sister called and said it sounded like she needed to go to the hospital. They didn't send her. My sister went out there and the doctor said she was fine. Day 7 she told me she was having trouble breathing. She said they had to stop doing her physical therapy that day because they couldn't keep her oxygen levels up. My mom told me she wanted to go to the hospital but that the nurse told her the hospital would just tell her the same thing they were telling her, that she needed to practice breathing correctly. I called to express my concerns that she had become noticeably worse since she arrived and the nurse cut me off, saying, "I'm going to stop you right there unless you want to keep going." Then she proceeded to tell me that they felt like her fluid levels were the problem and they were going to work to get the fluid off. That evening I heard someone say they had ordered a chest xray. 22 hours later, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. 22 hours!!! With all of the warning signs, and considering how common pneumonia is in nursing facilities, it should not have taken this long. So many wrong things happened. I'm not a medical professional but I could tell that something was wrong. I didn't feel that they listened to me or my sister or my mom. The morning after she was diagnosed with pneumonia she ended up in the hospital. Her CO2 levels were so high that she was having issues with cognitive function. This could've been avoided if the staff at Laurels had done their job of paying attention to the patient's symptoms and concerns. We removed her from Laurels.
