Russell and Miriam Grinnell Memorial Nature Sanctuary

Arguably the best views on the Keweenaw from the top of Bare Bluff! The trail in from the parking area is an old two-track. After approx a half mike, you will enter the wooded area and come to a sign where the loop begins. For an easy/moderate hike go to the LEFT (up into the woods) until you reach the top. It is a constant, moderate ascent through the woods. Come back down the same way. If you begin the loop to the right, it is much more challenging. You are climbing along the bottom of the face, across a rock slide area and climbing up a fairly steep gully. I am a woman who has reached Medicare age and have recently had both knees replaced. I did the difficult path last week and was very proud of myself. Some guide books call it treacherous; I think that's a bit overstated but there are a few places with steep drop-offs near the trail. Inspiring views from down below looking up the face of the rock, and vista from the top of the Bluff are truly awe-inspiring.
