JP Porcalla is a top tier instructor and it was a privilege to attend his class. He made the CPL material relevant and very easy to understand. Though I had previous shooting experience he corrected some deficiencies he saw in my technique from which I saw immediate improvement. I would recommend his classes to anyone, from beginner to veteran shooter. Five stars+.

I attended the basic handgun on 2/19. The class was definitely more than basic. I don't think I could have had a better instructor than JP. His knowledge and experience is second to none. The class was definitely not boring. The way JP had me focus on the little things from the classroom teaching and hands-on training has helped me greatly. He has a way making things easy to understand. If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

One thing is for sure - you will never get bored during a CCW/CPL course here. JP brings the energy and intensity throughout, and even though I'm a combat vet with extensive weapons training, he gave me instruction at the range that improved my marksmanship with his great coaching. His passion for firearms and the training of them are very clear, and while he could charge more given his experience and background, he chooses not to. What impressed me most is that he takes the time to learn everyone's name in the class - you're more than just another person wanting to learn, he wants you to go home to your family at the end of a dangerous encounter. I plan to take his advanced courses in the future, don't hesitate to take any courses with Focus 1st.

I took JPs CPL training on Saturday and Ive got to say Im more than impressed. He is without a doubt one of the top (if not THE top) qualified, affordable, and personable instructor you will find in michigan. Hes like a walking bible for everything to know about guns. Hes been in live combat situations from his past occupation which I wont spoil to tell, competitive shooter (reigning Midwest champion at speed shooting for many consecutive years and counting), integrates life lessons and 1 on 1 training at the shooting range as needed, and all payments for the trainings he does alone go towards charity! He has worked with training law enforcement, security guardsyou name it, hes done it. He takes time to answer all questions and clearly explains the key points in training as he takes the training extremely seriously while still keeping it fun, energetic, interactive and engaging with students. All materials are provided in the price (including gun rental and ammo which other CPL classes charge extra for!!!)! He has countless achievements, certificates and awards hanging in his classroom which shows how qualified he is. God bless him and his family, much respect and thank you for serving this country. My only complaint is that we ended the training about 2hrs later than was scheduled, part of it was because there were a lot of questions, but the other part was JP likes telling a lot of stories :) Nevertheless I enjoyed the class and may take his more advanced classes in the future.

Thank you, Steven. You did great at the range and outshot all your classmates. Your shot group was tight with all of them in one jagged hole. You were well deserving of the title "Top Shooter in the Class". You said, you've never shot that well before. Now you did as you know what you have to do. You listened to instruction and you executed well. Practice diligently to keep honing your shooting skills. I'm here if you have any questions or need clarifications. Stay safe and healthy.

Thank you for the kind words. You did very well at the range. You said you've never shot that well before in your life...but you did. You learned and listened to instruction properly. All I did was show you how to do it properly, but you are the one that performed the actual shooting. Shooting is not hard, but you just need to be taught properly. Keep on practicing as it will hone your skill. Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or clarification. Stay safe and healthy.

I'm glad you learned and enjoyed the class. Sorry for not ending the class on time. Yes, there were a lot of questions and comments from the other students...not only directed to me...but to the other student who just retired from the Michigan State Police. As a former Trooper ( taking a class to get his CPL) he had a lot to share with the class. I appreciate him answering questions directed to him by the other students. Like I mentioned in the class, I will never deny or prevent any students from asking questions that are important to them...even if it prolong the class. I owe all my students the courtesy to answer their questions. You did really well shooting at the range for never having shot a handgun before. For a first timer, you did very well. You listened, learned and executed very well. You came in second place only to the retired State Trooper who had 31 years experience in the force. All your shots were all in "vital zone" but just not as tight as the Trooper. Like I told you, you have the making of a very good shooter. Just train often and keep on practicing. Only trough repetition one becomes proficient. Remember, shooting skill is a diminishing skill. Use it or loose it. So, keep on practicing.Don't hesitate to call or email me if you ever have any questions.Stay safe and healthy.
