image I've made a number of good decisions in my life, but in the top three is hiring Margurite Decker to design, implement, oversee, and execute the landscaping on my grandparents' home. I am not a man who is prone to unwarranted compliments, but I promise you, this is in the top three best decisions I have ever made.
First, there's the fact that there isn't another equally talented landscape architect in southeast Michigan that I am aware of. I am very confident that Margurite's talent level exceeds any other designer's talent and taste levels by orders of magnitude.
I took a tremendous about of time viewing people's portfolios and representative works - in person and virtually. For the most part, the worked looked like it was on par with a nice industrial park in Pontiac. If there was such a thing as a nice industrial park in Pontiac, that is. It was all soulless and uninspired. Most of these other designers were better fits for McDonald's locations on the Ohio Turnpike.
The second reason why I count this among by top three financial and/or economic decisions is that Margurite paid her own fee twice. The first time she paid my fee to her was when she purchased the plants that she had selected. She saved me her entire design fee on the plants alone. How do I know that? I had a friend with a nursery and stock license review the quotes for me, and he re-quoted the nursery order for me, at the friend's price, and she saved me her entire design fee right there.
She saved me her fees another time, and unfortunately it was when something outside her control went horribly wrong. Or, more precisely, there was a pre-existing problem that she had no way of knowing about when she quoted the job. I, too, was unaware of this issue. She informed me of the problem, but before she did so, she produced and quoted out remedial courses of actions. The course of action she suggested to me not only saved me the fee I paid her, but it definitely saved me money in future and significant foundation repairs.
In short, her taste and abilities are beyond reproach. Her ability to execute that vision is second to none. The value these two attributes provides to her clients is well in excess of the fees she charges. If you're considering a major landscaping project and you don't consider her services, you simply hate your money. She has my unconditional and unreserved recommendation.

image Margurite was hired to draw up plans for some gardens on my property, but, after paying for the plans, I did not end up going forward with her as the gardener. I found working with her to be unpleasant and difficult, in part, due to her gratuitous peppery comments degrading Americans or American habits in contrast to Europeans. In addition, she seemed little concerned with drafting a garden plan that included items that I wanted to have planted, rather than creating a design of her own vision and dimension. (Heaven forbid one suggest planting yarrow!). The grand finale was when she boldly asserted what she believed to be her discretion in directing my tree contractor to prune and remove trees and branches that I had not authorized, leaving me with far more spaces to fill than I had had in the first place. I found dealing with her to be time consuming, expensive and stressful, to say the least.
