Had him come do my drive and all the water then ran into the office and he came back and added to the drive which made it worse and he also did another guys drive and he never came back to correct the mistakes there either, all the water sets in drive till sun dries it up or it all runs into the office!

I hired Lovell Asphalt Construction to pave our previously stone driveway. Upon completion, I noticed a small puddle at the seam where our existing concrete by the garage met the new asphalt driveway. I raised this concern with the owners son and he said that theyve been spraying the driveway with a lot of water during construction and implied that it was normal. We had some rain overnight and the small puddle grew to a 15 ft wide and 1 deep pool of standing water. We did not have any pooling in our driveway before they touched it. It was at this time that I noticed several other deficiencies in the construction of the driveway: 1) The driveway was graded such that it was higher on the sides and lower in the middle - the opposite of what you see on public roads - which causes any runoff to go down the middle of the driveway instead of off to the side away from the house. 2) The asphalt was noticeably higher than the concrete where it met the pad and sloped towards it instead of level with it and sloping away. In this area, rain hits the driveway, flows TOWARD the concrete pad and stands there stagnant, eventually seeping into the seam. Inevitably this will lead to costly damage to the driveway as well as the concrete pad. 3) Signs of poor compaction during the preparation of the sub-base such as noticeable medium to large dips in the driveway and roller marks Unfortunately, I would come to learn that the nightmare had just begun. I raised my concern that poor/improper grading, leveling, and compacting were leading to drainage issues. Bob was clearly very irritated (his word) at my implication that something was not done properly. He refused to take any responsibility for any wrongdoing or oversight, but said he would bring his crew out with an infrared heater to try to fix the drainage issue by heating the asphalt and rolling it out to be level with the concrete. Bob and his two sons showed up with a handheld propane torch - not the infrared heater that was discussed - and instead of trying to level the asphalt, they essentially dug a rough and uneven trench through the middle of the driveway. Not only did this completely ruin the appearance of the driveway, it clearly didn't work. Water still pooled in the exact same spots as before. To his credit, Bob called me at this point and told me he didnt like the way it was looking and that hed have to come back a third time. On their third visit, Bob and his sons cut out the channel and filled it with asphalt, creating a larger, smoother, concave channel. They also accidentally cut into the concrete pad (see photo). Its small, but demonstrates a lack of craftsmanship, care, and consideration since it was never communicated with me. As you can see from the photos, this did not fix the underlying issue. At this point we have a visually appalling driveway with drainage problems that we didnt have before. Our kids dont have a flat surface to play on, its jarring to drive over it, and its certainly not the new driveway we paid for. Wanting to resolve the issue amicably, and knowing I would have to pay another contractor to remove everything in order to start fresh and pave the driveway properly I proposed: 1) Bob remove the existing asphalt and reimburse the full cost of the driveway or 2) Remove the existing asphalt, re-grade, level, and compact the sub-base and re-pave the driveway at no additional cost to us Refusing both of these options, Bobs only alternative solution was to allow him to come back and add more asphalt to the channel, leveling it with the surrounding surface. The problem is that since the asphalt is already too high here, this wont actually fix anything at all. Furthermore, each of the two fixes thus far have degraded the overall appearance of the driveway. We are utterly dissatisfied with Lovell Asphalt Construction. As such, do not believe the text on their flyer which states 100% customer satisfaction. It is my opinion that these photos speak volumes for their lack of craftsmanship and professionalism.
