I really don't like to leave bad reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience. I was seeing Kristin for, roughly, the past month. I think I saw her maybe 5 times max. The last session we had together was a week ago today, so I did wait a moment to see. We were close to the end of our session, I had been rambling, so she let me know we were out of time and we could pick up where we left off next time/session. Then, she quickly ushered me out of her room without making an appointment. I figured she might have me make it at the front but when we got there she also just said bye then warmly greeted her next client. She hasn't reached out since to make an appointment with me so, essentially, I was ghosted by her. I was ghosted by a professional therapist. Thats pretty messed up to do working in a field where the consumers you work with deal with abandonment issues, self esteem and other issues that make being ghosted even more difficult. Let alone from a professional who is supposed to specialize and know how to handle situations and people who struggle with those kinds of things. As a consumer, I'm aware I could have reached out for a session. However, I didn't because I didn't feel like she cared. I felt like the sessions were just me rambling and trying to talk to fill the hour. There was never any reflection or digging into why I was doing what I was or how it happened that way, things like that. In fact, in our last session I would intentionally let silence fall to see if she would try to fill it or have a deeper, more meaningful conversation, but it never happened. Truthfully, I could have just called up my brother and rambled for an hour and it would have been just as therapeutic and it would have been free. So, given this, seeking out an appointment with her wasn't something I was going to do. I don't think it makes it any more acceptable to handle the situation like she did. If she didn't feel like it was a good fit, saying that would have been WAY more professional, and she could have even maybe referred me to someone who she thought I would work well with. Or at the very least, she could have sent something in the mail stating she doesn't want to keep working with me. Instead, nothing. That's really unprofessional and very hurtful. I waited the week to see if she would but she didn't. I chose here because of the great reviews but I haven't had anywhere near the same experience. I care a lot about therapy. I show up for all my sessions and I have graduated DBT therapy twice, which requires a large amount of work and dedication. If you're looking for a therapist that will match that energy, I'd look further than Kristin at Burton Professional Counseling. I think I have the ability to be more direct with people and it isn't literally what I went to school for and do every day. For over a year, I've gotten way better services through GHS/Genesee Community Health Center. I'm honestly just blown away at the lack of professionalism and she can do better. Edit to add: the covid excuse is exactly that, an excuse. not sure what being out of the office for "some time" means, but she was perfectly fine and healthy on the 24th. I left this review on the 30th and conveniently heard back on the 31st. Exactly when was this "some time?" lol, it's November 3rd. There was a whole week for the therapist to have people reach out and figure out rescheduling. I'd have to imagine that as soon as she found out she had covid, calls were being made to her consumers to reschedule or switch to video appointments, and I never was. To say she didn't reschedule with any of her patients for over a week is, frankly, a lie. I do not wish to work with any therapists here. I honestly doubt the call back was because there was a care for me as a consumer but more so you didn't want to tarnish your "record." I truly feel had I not left this I would have never heard from her or the office. Even my case manager that I've worked with for a year felt bad and said that's not acceptable. leaving the review up. Just take accountability.
