Beaumont psychiatric hospital in Dearborn to be run by company with controversial past
Beaumont is partnering on a new psychiatric hospital with Universal Health Services, which paid $122 million to settle whistleblower lawsuits

Beaumont Health is handing control of its inpatient psychiatric services to a for-profit company accused in recent years by regulators and whistleblowers of abusing and endangering patients and fraudulently billing Medicare and Medicaid for millions of dollars.
Universal Health Services, a Pennsylvania-based, publicly traded company that operates more than 185 inpatient behavioral health facilities around the country, is financing construction of a new, $40 million psychiatric hospital in Dearborn for Beaumont and will run day-to-day operations once it opens.
Tom Watkins, who used to lead the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority, said he worries that Universal's bottom line is to make money for its shareholders, and that could put low-income patients in danger.
"Their goal is to make money, and there's not a lot of profit in taking in very, very sick patients," Watkins said. "The beds tend not to take the public patients."

Worst place to deal with especially having a loved one in their staff dont like to call and give information about patients even though your on the medical records seems like they just try to keep you for their own benefits 10/10 would never recommend a institution like this one if anyone is seeing this I would have your loved ones transferred to a better facility

They have a great team of professionals here, they are always available to help collaborate and get patients in and a valuable treatment partner. Susan goes above and beyond to help patients get needed resources and address their mental health needs, would highly recommend them

There were a few staff members who helped me significantly by talking to me during my stay, but I would not recommend that anyone go here for inpatient. The adult units are 24 people of varying mental illness, which can leave many patients feeling unsafe and getting traumatized by the experience. It doesn't feel like the staff on the unit practices trauma informed care, and some of the nurses seemed to find joy in telling patients that we weren't allowed to have something that we absolutely were allowed to have. I had to argue to get my glasses back and I had to argue to be allowed to take one of my prescriptions that I have been on for years, while being in my worst mental place.
One of my biggest complaints is that the electronic consent forms that patients are asked to sign, are unable to be read or reviewed before signing because the computer screen doesn't move enough to allow a patient to see. This caused my discharge paperwork to be sent to a doctor I haven't seen in almost 10 years, because I wasn't allowed to read what I was signing.
Please encourage staff to utilize google translate or a different electronic translator service to communicate with patients who don't speak English when it's outside of translator worker hours. It also feels neglectful that patients who don't speak English are only able to effectively verbally communicate between 9am and 5pm.
My entire experience was frustrating, and despite the improvements I've made from the medication changes, I am deeply dissatisfied with my experience here and hope that changes can be made on a corporate level so patients are less traumatized and more informed throughout the inpatient process.
