Wife and I were doing some research to prepare for family coming to visit us in a couple of weeks so we decide to try The Prime Rib at Maryland Live!
The experience of walking in via the casino, and accompanying poorly dressed casino crowd cheapens the entire experience.
Post-meal, it now makes sense, and should be taken as a sign of caution that this location is not even included on the website, theprimeribs dot com, of the original Baltimore and DC sites.... just sayin. caveat emptor.
ATMOSPHERE: Having to deal with all the tacky casino atmosphere just to get into the restaurant starts things off on the wrong foot. Where the Baltimore location is like a nice urban Hells Kitchen vibe, this is just glaring lights, and masses of thugs and their 'posses' poorly dressed like thugs bad video actors, thronging their way into the casino via the same doors you have to use to get into The Prime Rib. Not a great way to start what was supposed to be a special dining experience. If you don't want to do valet parking be prepared to walk 10 minutes or so if you come on a thurs, fri, or sat.
Entering into the restaurant, the interior of the reception area is nice enough but as soon as you walk through you must go through a very poorly designed bar area, filled with high top tables, bright lights, and no seeming rhyme or reason to the decor. It's not at all that jazzy supper club NY steak house vibe that one expects from the legacy. It just felt cheap. Clientele was mostly dressed as if they were going to a sports bar to eat chicken wings.
At best, they should have some very heavy drapes or shutters or something else to more completely separate that failed outdoor seating area from the main dining room.
FOOD & SERVICE:
Service started out nicely enough. We were greeted within just a couple of minutes after being seated. Server was pleasant and gave a nice rundown of the nightly specials, and took our drink order. We were not having any wine so we opted for a bottle of VOSS flat water, and started reviewing the menu.
My steak was ordered medium and came out a very well medium well with only several small bites having even a hint of pink.
After 3 minutes of cutting into it the server still had not come back by the table to check on the preparation so I decide to just go ahead and eat it. There were only 7 other tables in the main dining room...
Menu prices are definitely top of the range for pretty much any major city in the US. and possibly even higher.
(all prices shown below include tax)
$75 for their basic ribeye steak. No sides included.
Terribly overcooked, grey dry, SO SAD.
$38 for roasted chicken. It was good, but not enough to save the meal.
$26 for 6 medium size oysters rock. Very enjoyable and the only part of the entire meal I could recommend, other than the price. Even for a high end restaurant that's pushing it.
$208 for ONE POUND of king crab legs.
$208 for ONE POUND of king crab legs.
$208 for ONE POUND of king crab legs.
$208 for ONE POUND of king crab legs.
Oh wait- I think I forgot to say:
$208 for ONE POUND OF KING CRAB LEGS
The Bottom Line:
Overall, extremely overprice for the atmosphere and food quality. It lacks the polish and attention to fine details the Baltimore and DC locations. The casino just lowers the bar for the entire experience.
We had terrible service overall. No excuse for nothing checking back within the first 2 minutes of a meal being served- especially at a steakhouse!
Massively overpriced considering MISSES ON THE FOOD all the other fails in service and atmosphere.
If you want a special night try the original Baltimore location or Capital Grill which is light years ahead in all respects.
