Every encounter was always professional, friendly, caring, and truly helpful. We always felt like he truly cared about our well being. Sometimes mental health professionals feel formulaic. That wasn't the case here at all. We always felt "heard." We would absolutely recommend Dr. Joe James to anyone needing marriage counseling or relationship counseling.

I will say this, we had a connection and I think that helped tremendously. I will let everyone in on a secret...what makes for an insightful counselor is EXPERIENCE. Knowledge? Yes. But experience more so. It takes time to get traction. With Dr. Joe, you will get there. He is extremely patient....words easily said....but it takes great skill to execute it. Is it easy to take time and meet? No. But what in life do you not have to apply your self in order to get results? So peruse Psych Today's counselors. When you are finished, you will feel directionless. Here is some direction....contact Dr. Joe. Here is a snipet: If you've seen the abused animals on ASPCA commercials and wonder why you feel more empathy for the animals than for humans....Dr. Joe can talk you through it.

Dr James had us fill out a package of forms about ourselves , our marriage, background etc. from which he did not appear to have retained information. His method seemed to be cookie cutter, and in not tailored to our situation. I never really felt heard by him. Only after calling to cancel, when he talked us into coming back, did he seem to begin to bring it. By then it was just too late to feel any connection. Im sure he has a lot of skills, but I felt he was, until expressing dissatisfaction, just phoning it in. I would not recommend him.

I’m very sorry that you had such a negative experience. I can assure you that I was most certainly not phoning it in and I was doing my absolute best to hear and understand you. You are correct in that I use a very structured format in my first appointment as a way to quickly understand the dynamics at play. It usually does take a session or two for rapport to be fully built and for me to have a plan in mind for exactly how to best help you as I first need to understand who you are and what you’re struggling with as a couple. From your review it sounds like this was your experience - that things in session began to improve as we got to know one another better but that you had unfortunately lost faith in me based on our initial interactions. Thank you for your feedback and I hope that things work out for you and your husband.
