January 2024 UPDATE: And it's a good one! Michael helped me out almost 10 years ago with my row home in Baltimore City. Then again 3 years ago with getting our new county home purchase in order as we bought during that time where home inspections were not a thing (thanks COVID). Work was done promptly and beautifully then - shout out to Jermaine - a master in his craft! A year after that I called him up again and needed a new concrete driveway and underground gutter drains - another great final product! And now a bathroom update that SHINES! Ermie and Kevin completely ripped out my bathroom with a phonebooth shower and gave me the bathroom I dreamed of! Emie has a meticulousness that is unmatched! If I need another home update, I know exactly who I'm dialing. Thanks yet again WBG! ORGINAL REVIEW: He's licensed and insured - plus he owns and has renovated properties within the Charles Village area (and all over Baltimore too). He knows old houses and what "surprises" might occur. Prompt, super communicative, transparent, reasonable, and friendly. What else could you want in a contractor??? His employees are also top notch, especially his foreman Chuck. The kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with. Mike will always now be my go-to guy.

My wife and I have been working with Michael and the WBG for the past 10 years. We first met and worked with Michael when we lived in Baltimore (in a Harwood row home), when we hired him to install a few new windows, then help with some flooring and new bedroom carpet. We have since moved to Towson, and have continued our relationship with the WBG, getting help with installing new ceiling fans and electrical outlets, digging up a crumbling asphalt driveway and laying a new concrete driveway and parking pad, and most recently, remodeling our primary bathroom. Each time we've worked with Michael and the WBG, it has been on discrete projects (one at a time, but ranging greatly in cost and scope), and we have had a very positive experience overall. Michael has always been personable, helpful, reasonable, and fair with my family, and we have consistently had good experiences with his contractors. Ermie and Kevin recently (Dec 2023 - Jan 2024) led our bathroom remodel, and we could not be happier with the process and outcome. While the project took a little (about a week) longer than we anticipated to complete, the work was very well done. Ermie and Kevin were respectful, hardworking, careful, and kind. I felt very comfortable welcoming them into my home, and feel incredibly grateful for their careful attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work.

Purchasing our first home was a milestone and dream come true for my family and me. We worked hard, we waited, and fought hard to finally be able to secure a home for us to create memories in. We were even blessed enough to have been able to revitalize our home by bringing it up to date and modernize it while keeping many of its charming features. Being entrepreneurs and business owners, my husband and I set out to find a contractor who was minority owned but could also deliver a great quality of work. We took our time and interviewed contractors and got estimates and timelines and we finally felt that Michael at The Washington Building Group would and could deliver on this large-scale renovation of our home that we were seeking. However, this experience could not be one that I would wish on anyone else. It has been nearly 10 months since we signed a contract with Michael in March of 2023, and Michael and his team broke ground or started demolition on our property in May of 2023. Our property is nearly still in the same state as it had been since first phases of progress were made in June 2023, while he collected payments at a rate of nearly 80% of our contract value for work that was incomplete, or simply not done. We have no walls up in some of the rooms, our ceilings are open, our fireplace and floors are surmounted with dust and debris, and all the fixtures, tiles, finishes, and other items that we were implored to purchase by Michael have been sitting in the same place since August of 2023. Michael has relentlessly and habitually lied about timelines, inspection dates, permit issues and even admitted to not have stepped foot onto our property for several months at a time. His falsehoods have forced us to file a formal complaint with the MHIC, where our claim is currently under investigation. Because of our large renovation, we have found temporary living arrangements that have now wreaked havoc on our finances and is nearly an hour away from the home we purchased. We wake our children at 5am daily to get them ready to bear the traffic as we head to their school. I cant even count the amount of times that we have had to wipe tears from their faces out of frustration that they have to get up so early, and also how many times my husband and I have had to have the difficult conversation of not knowing when our property is going to be completed for us to move in to. Our neighbors have questioned us, and with the holiday season upon us, we are heavily pained that we face the possibility of not being able to spend Christmas in our home. It is beyond disappointing, frustrating, & hurtful to see others who have left rave reviews for Michael when their projects have begun after ours and have been completed before ours. We have begged mercifully for Michaels honesty and transparency to no avail. And as a small business owner, it pains me to write this review as my intention is never to bring another business down, but rather lift and build them up by supporting them. My family and I are mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted from dealing with the constant disappointments of Michael and his unprofessional endeavors. As a CEO, I could never imagine having this level of astounding unprofessionalism, and as a cohort mate of the Goldman Sachs program, I know he was taught to do better. My family and I are currently out of stick and stones, I feel a severe level of anxiety when I enter my property, because it no longer felt like the home we purchased in November of 2022. Daily, my mind looms with frustration and confusion constantly asking myself have I done or we done anything personal to warrant this type of behavior from him. Needless to say, if I could give this man negative star ratings I absolutely would. If you dont want this to be an experience of your own, I would strongly advise you to seek another company and not be swayed by his wit/charm.

Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed review. Your candid response expresses a very trying and difficult experience. We take your insights to heart and are currently working hard to rectify the gross disconnect. In fact this is in part why, no online response was provided since your posting. Reviews are a significant means to alert and/or influence future customers and so I take this review very seriously. Additionally, to get to the point of a formally submitted complaint suggests your efforts to otherwise resolve the situation were not met with the fervor or interest level you deserved. I first want to express my sincerest apologies for this overall negative experience. My honor and integrity have been challenged which impacts more than just the success of my business but also my family name. Whatever appropriate means to address the issues you’ve outlined will be pursued so that I will never be publicly called a liar again. Additionally, I desire to preserve your reviewed experience as a reminder to the commitment to excellent service we made but in this case did not meet. What you and your family have endured during the past 11 months is not lost on us, especially given that you and your husband are both parents AND entrepreneurs. The stress and anxiety you’ve endured to enable a robust renovation was worsened by myriad factors which unfortunately coincided at a most inopportune time. After review of your letter, I’ve identified the crux of the issues as ineffective communication and poor management of expectations.Simply put, The Washington Building Group did not meet your reasonable expectations due to a number of professional and significant family health challenges that coincided at the same time as your renovation. While there is no excuse for the negative experience you and your family have endured, I sincerely hope that the following context helps to illuminate what actions we have and will take to ensure you and no one else has the same experience. We also invite you to share your continued experience as we work to resolve each of the concerns you’ve addressed. As we continue to complete you project, we hope we can regain a portion of your trust in our company. .I take personal responsibility for each of your claims and have initiated the following processes. 1. Improved up front communication about expectations: we will update procedures to include better estimates on project timelines adjusted for company-wide workload. We’ll also introduce worst case scenarios and triggers discussions. When multiple triggers are activated, we’ll provide appropriate responses to remedy or otherwise curb the negative impact of these potentialities, especially when we are at fault. 2. Project plan updates every week on large renovation projects, including coordinating on site walk through discussions with the homeowner. These pre-scheduled walk throughs will help provide peace of mind. 3. Quality Service guarantee: I’m committing credits and discounts from my bottom line and profitability for major setbacks due to company error/negligence.4. We agree that clients should never feel their project has taken a lower priority so we will work to expand crews, accurately communicate start and finish schedules and/or otherwise adjust workloads to ensure our customers feel they are the only project being worked on.I sincerely hope that through these efforts we can demonstrate our renewed commitment to excellence and better communication.
