I have been a patient of Dr. Goldthwaite for about 30 years! Since he first set up practice in Maine. I find him to be a very competent eye Dr. It does take awhile for your appointment with him. I don't mind because I feel he is very thorough. I travel over 110 miles to see him for my appointment. I trust his experience and competence. He was able to diagnose a very serious medical issue, while he was doing my routine eye exam. While I already knew about the issue, I was impressed that he was able to diagnose it. And he was very considerate when he told me about it. I highly recommend Dr. Goldthwait! That being said, I will say that I only gave him four stars because he always tries to sell me his glasses from his eye glass store, next door.I feel once your given the prescription, you can shop wherever you choose. I would've given him 4.5 out of 5 but it wasn't an option LOL.

Several bad experiences at this office. My sons school referred him here after an exam they did in the school. I was told that there was no cost through a specific program with the Bangor school system. I was scheduled an appointment at the same time. Although his was free, I gave them our insurance cards at the first appointment with the mindset that this office is where wed establish our eye care. The first time we went there, we were there for a total of three hours between the exam and picking out eye glasses because of how far they were running behind. We scheduled an appointment for a month out to check on my sons eyes after his new prescription. I later received a call from one of the receptions giving me attitude that they had to write off my sons exam because our insurance wasnt accepted and I was supposed to get a referral from his pediatrician in order to establish care there. Yet - my appointment was covered by our insurance. I tried to ask for clarification because I did not understand this insurance process. The woman just kept repeating that we needed a referral from his pediatrician and that they had to write off his exam. Not helpful. Fast forward to this year, my son had his annual eye exam. I called to get a reminder of the date and I was told that my son was not in their records, again - very rudely. The woman said Theres no record of him here so you must be calling the wrong office. I responded no - hes been there several times. She then apologized and laughed and said she spelled his name wrong but still with attitude. I was under the impression that everything was all set with our insurance this time around and the referral was all set. Nope. I was wrong. I was called two hours before his appointment time (by the same woman I got attitude from last year) and she reminded me that they had to write off his last exam because our insurance wasnt taken. I told her I was still confused. She was extremely rude and said that she would run our cards again to see if she could figure out, and shed call me back. She never called me back, so we missed the appointment and I decided not to deal with it anymore. Within 15 minutes of calling Vision Care of Maine, we had a new patient appointment set up for next month. Additionally, my partner set up an appointment with them earlier this year. He called to confirm the date and time so he could get the time off from work. They told him that they did not have any records of him or an appointment. Yet, the day before the appointment, they gave him a reminder call. He told them that he had just called the week before and they told him he wasnt in their system. So, that appointment was missed as well for their lack of organization - and again, it was easy to get an appointment with Vision Care of Maine. Just avoid this office. It is all headaches and you will get attitude and rude workers if you ask for clarification on anything.

I would give zero starts if possible. If you can't handle the amount of clients don't make appointments only to run thr an hour behind... on a good day.

I would give zero stars if that were an option. Greedy and money hungry. Screwing over people with bad vision because we have no other choice than to pay ridiculous prices or else we dont see. Barbaric. The quality of the contact lenses Ive spent hundreds of dollars out of pocket for is so terrible its a crime. Lets talk about the $150 contact lens fitting that they charge at every single lens fitting even when were trying out new lenses because the last lenses the great old doc picked out kept tearing in my eye? And then that pair tearing in my eye not even a week after use. Lets talk about insisting on dilating my eyes even though no other doctor ever felt the need to every single year, me saying no thank you because I dont want to pay the extra $40 copay for it because my insurance doesnt cover it, and then being told it doesnt cost anything extra, but then having to pay for it upon checking out because their employee was either misinformed or just lying to get me to do it because, again, people with bad vision will do whatever and pay whatever because we have no choice or else we dont see. Im not doing it anymore and will not be paying one single cent more to these mongrels. Thanks, Ill just be driving around the whole state with nothing in my eyeballs now guys!

Ms. Gagain,Thank you for the kind words regarding your care at my practice. I do recommend our optical for eyewear as I know the quality of eyewear, in regards to frames and lense they sell and believe strongly in them. You are correct it is your prescription and you may take it anywhere you wish to have it filled (including any of the budget optical locations). Again, thank you for the kind words.
