Hi Gary! Thank you for visiting Bangor Humane Society and considering adoption. I just wanted to take a moment and clarify the reasons for our adoption fees and I would happily answer any other questions you might have about our processes. Did you know that it costs us, on average, more than $850 to prepare a cat for adoption, with the average cost of a cat adoption being $75-225? This preparation often means spaying or neutering, vaccinating, treating for worms, ticks, and fleas, doing bloodwork to check for common but dangerous diseases, and for boarding an animal for approximately 25 days before it goes into a new home. The costs to prepare a dog averages more than $1300, with adoption fees only costing $100-450. We are not state or federally funded, and rely on donors and grantors to subsidize these expenses so we can continue our mission to find compatible homes for the more than 2,000 animals we see and care for here at BHS each year. Most people find, once they have all the facts, that the adoption fee at BHS is very small in comparison to breeder fees to purchase a cat or dog, followed by veterinary fees to make sure said animals are responsibly cared for so they may live long, full, happy lives.
