What was I expecting? I'm in a Lesbian marriage. We got a thanksgiving basket ..... And it was like nothing. To top it off, it was in some woman's car when my wife went to pick it up, and they couldn't find it. I'm just so annoyed that they can blatantly discriminate against a couple. I know single people who received more in their basket than our family of 2. This is not okay. Next year, we will do something else than get a basket from them. In response to the WONDERFUL MESSAGE the salvation army left, when my wife signed up, she said she was married. The person who signed her up IMMEDIATELY asked her HUSBAND'S name. And.... We had to call THIS MORNING, because we do not have our own transportation, and ours fell through, so we made emergency plans. So, yeah, Jesus may not judge, but they sure do.

I cant thank the Captains for they selflessness in what they do everyday for this community. I personally have received help and it always came with a smile and no judgement or criticism. They truly care for the people they encounter. Bless you both!

Unfortunately it’s things like this that continue to perpetuate the false narrative that The Salvation Army discriminates on any basis. I am only taking the time to write this reply so that others aren’t continually misled.Firstly, we do not make or distribute the Thanksgiving baskets in Augusta. We partner with St. Michael’s by signing folks up for baskets at our office and then providing them a count and the names of who will be picking the baskets up. The baskets are provided, packed, and distributed by St. Michael’s at St. Michael’s Secondly, we were contacted this morning which was the morning of the basket distribution to let us know that you would not be able to make it to St. Michael’s to pick up your basket, so my wife kindly took time out of her very busy schedule to go pick up your basket for you and bring it back to The Salvation Army so that you could come pick it up when you were available. So that is the reason why it was in her van because she had come back from picking it up for you and our employee wasn’t sure where it was when you arrived to pick it up. Not to mention the fact that you arrived after our office was already closed.Thirdly, we would have no way of knowing your sexual orientation because that is not something we even ask or consider when trying to help people in our community.I am sorry if you felt like what you received in your Thanksgiving Basket was not adequate unfortunately we have no control over it, we are just the sign up agency. If you feel like you would rather go elsewhere in the future for a Thanksgiving Basket we completely understand, but to anyone else who may be reading this, I almost never respond to any negative reviews because we don’t want to seem petty and to be honest, we are so busy that we have very little time to do so, but I want you to know directly from us that part of our mission has been and always will be to “Meet human needs in Jesus name, without discrimination.” And we will continue to do that here in Central Maine and anywhere my wife and I are ever stationed. We love this community and will continue to do our best to serve faithfully the families and individuals who live here. Blessings!
