UnityPoint Health - AbbeHealth Services - Abbe Center for Community Mental Health - Iowa City

Some of the staff are great, many other staff are very much so lacking in care. I've waited over an hour for an appointment on several, several occasions. Would not recommend going here for help unless it's your last resort.

My experience thus far, this is not a place that takes your feelings into consideration when prescribing meds. You can express that you've had an unpleasant experience with a medication and i was still prescribed that med in a higher dosage. Provider was very nonchalant and passive-aggressive. I felt very brushed off when I expressed frustration with feeling like I wasn't being heard. I was told that in order to get prescribed medication for a behavior disorder that I needed to get tested for it elsewhere, and this provider couldn't tell me where I could go for that. That was a dead end with no solution. She actually started to ignore me toward the end of our conversation as if I were argumentative with when I was totally calm. I left there feeling like this wasn't a person I could freely express my worries and goals with treatment because by her responses and body language, I felt like I was being judged for being there for the wrong reasons. I also feel like she talked down to me like I was inferior and uneducated. She had this "I know more than you" attitude so she didn't have to, or i wasn't worth listening to. You wait several months to be seen for these appointments for it to go like this? I felt very discouraged and disappointed. For the first time, I wanted to advocate for my mental health and take it seriously by admitting I'm struggling and need help and instead I left there feeling very hurt and embarrassed. Her name is Ellen, wouldn't recommend.

I don't even know where to begin with this review. I've had to switch doctors multiple times here because their doctors don't care enough to refill prescriptions or not cancel appointments three times in a row. Idk if you guys know this but you are SERVING psychiatric patients who NEED those meds. You're altering their brain chemistry in a lazy effort to make your money without doing a thing. I can call and request a refill, and they'll call me back and say if I need an appointment I need to make one. Not once did I even mention an appointment, so clearly these people cannot read or hear. It's frustrating to know as a low income person that this dumpster bin my one chance at sanity. Call back and they say oh I didn't know you needed a refill. Did these people even go to school or did you just find someone off of the street?

Like all so called "mental health", non profits, a human being never answers the phone. Allthough they do a great job when one gets ahold of someone. "Speech is the hallmark of humanity" We are losing our humanity due to to communication technology. The V.A., university is much, much worse! A thumbs down to UnityPoint and all large limited liability Corps. Thumbs up for ABBE center!

After 27 years of PCPs who shrugged me off or changed the subject whenever I tried to broach my mental health needs, Abbe Center is the first provider Ive tried that actually practices patient-centered care. Theyve supported me through the trial and error process of finding real solutions, and their providers have given me hope about the options that are available for me. I couldnt recommend them highly enough, especially for folks who have had bad experiences seeking mental health support in the past.
