Witherspoon Presbyterian Church is a member of Presbyterian Church (USA) denominationally, a largely African-American congregation located on Indy's Northwestside. Rev. Winterbourne Harris-Jones serves as the congregation's pastor and the congregation has a wide variety of ministries including participation with Interfaith Hospitality Network (now known as Family Promise), a wellness ministry, a performing arts center, men's groups, women's groups, young adult ministry, and a group for the congregation's elder members. Rev. Harris-Jones is quite active in the community; I've heard him speak/preach twice including most recently when Witherspoon hosted a gun violence town hall in cooperation with Faith in Indiana. Witherspoon has a large parking lot area. The church itself is set apart from Michigan Road, though it's fairly close to Kessler and Michigan Road. You kind of feel like you're in a more wooded, serene area even though you're definitely still close to true neighborhood. They have defined accessible parking, though it's somewhat minimal. The parking lot is somewhat off to the side - this could be a little challenging during the winter, though I did notice some were using the small roundabout area toward the front of the church. There's a curb cut toward the end of the sidewalk by the parking lot. The front entrance is easily accessible. It's my understanding there's some renovation going on and it appears they are using an older sanctuary area. I actually really liked this sanctuary. I wasn't sure on seating capacity, but the side aisles were roomy enough that you could sit in a wheelchair and not be constantly bumped or in the way. As I recall, the altar area, however, would not be wheelchair friendly (which always causes me to drop a star - as a minister myself, it always bothers me when people in wheelchairs don't have equal opportunity to serve). Witherspoon was a terrific host for this event and I've known first-hand that they also work well with area congregations. I've attended an event with them and the nearby Crooked Creek Baptist Church (which is an American Baptist congregation - thus, on the more progressive end theologically). I have not attended a traditional Sunday service here, though I have little doubt I would feel comfy here. In fact, I was aware that multiple Unitarian-Universalists were in presence during the gun violence rally and there was a strong spirit of cooperation despite being in different places theologically. I've enjoyed the events I've attended here and enjoyed getting to witness the pastor at work. The congregation takes pride in getting to know people and I won't hesitate to return.
