We appreciate your business, and happy that you brought this situation to our attention. We do offer a Starting/Charging System test that costs $30.00. The vehicle your son is driving is a new car, and the computer controls the Alternator. Since it is a computer controlled Alternator, our service advisor thought it best to perform a full diagnostic test. This would include load testing, checking grounds and circuits, and depending on what he/she finds, conduct further testing. The computer can actually turn off your alternator because of other issues. Every vehicle and situation is unique. In your case, the situation was cut and dry, and your alternator was bad. We do have to charge for diagnostics, because we stand behind the diagnostics and repair. Our technicians have over 25 years of experience and have invested in the tools and equipment necessary to diagnose and repair vehicles. We also need to be sensitive to the customer's needs and adapt to the situation. We would like to discuss this with you, and see if we can come to a satisfactory solution.
