DINING AT THE BROOKSTONE After you get the young age staff to understand that they are here working for you, not the other way around, life gets better. My surprize Secret Shopper visit found Brookstone Assisted Living to be understaffed with (temporary) employee's that do not know the daily/emergency procedures, jockeying for position. Some employees are nice caring people but other understaffed members play favoritism, talk in an unprofessional manner about other residents in their care. In the same way, apartments appear spacious, clean, easy to negotiate. It does appear that it is more important sometimes that an office gets painted first rather than address residents apartment problem example; toilets, sinks that don't operate properly, lights that don't work, carpet that needs to be cleaned or replaced. Maintenance appears to be understaffed, repairs take longer then normal to get completed in accordance with state laws/standards. TV cable is adequate, WIFI/Life Alert is "Spotty" at most in this day in age, for the price the residents pay for there's service. Furthermore, Residents report what is most lacking is transportation (performed by unhappy staff members that have too drive residents to appointments) to medicial doctor offices, food pantry, other scheduled and none scheduled functions. Current transportation program is based "on a first-come first serve" due to limitations of space in the vehicle, leaving some residents to find alternative modes of transportation at the last minute. Residents report a major fault is Brookstone has a 4 wheel mini van which is a major size issue. If a resident has extra needs (ex: wheelchair, walker etc) it is left to the resident to figure it out, even tho Brookstone advertises they supply transportation. Likewise, reported from the residents on Hospice who stay in their rooms due health and mobility issues sometimes do not receive the same food amenities as residents that can make it to the dining room. Meals seem to be within State / Health dept guidelines, even tho some residents report the kitchen runs out of some food daily, portions sizes are sometimes "very small" liking those served in mid school. Limitations on seconds of drinks or food is enforced. Quoting..."if we give you seconds then some of the other residences that have doctors excuses from coming to the dining room at meal time due to a health issues, hospice issues, there would not be any or enough food for the staff to eat"... . On the otherhand, kitchen staff serving members are not wearing PPE Personal Protective Equipment (hair nets, gloves and washing of hands) leaving room for cross-contamination of food portions. Residents Recreation is very limited and only have a few programs, which recieve a grading of less then marginal at the most, leaving residents to play card games with little or no residents involvement. Limited housekeeping is addressed by completing (45 +or- residents rooms, over 400 ft of hallways /entrance, rest rooms, offices, and all by (1) staff member) a nearly impossible weekly task. Whereas, it was suggested if you are looking for help with your Assisted Living daily needs for yourself, family member and/or a loved one, feel free to contact, make your reservation to "Dine At The Brookstone" in Rantoul, Illinois. Footnote, you have been warned and advised by this Secret Shopper that some of the "residents" appear healthy, old, grumpy, unhappy to be at Brookstone. Quote"... not to many fun type of people around here...". Also reported most love to complain just about anything to make the day pass by, love to stick there nose in other residents business, run to the young age operating management office where reports of favoritism and Kangaroo Justice is embraced. In conclusion it was stated by a resident if you can get out, try to be young at heart, like to smile, a good laugh, or be in a good mood, joke around now and then, trying to enjoy your "Golden" years watch yourself in choosing Brookstone.
