Since Kate Hill moved, I've been seeing Dr. Faught but went to Dr. Lucking this time because our schedules aligned better. The hygienist Paige was friendly and professional, and I felt completely at ease during the cleaning. Dr. Lucking was enthusiastic and chatty, but I was a bit caught off guard when she began looking over my xray and making many verbal notes to the hygienist. She began calling out cavities in my mouth before I'd had it open for more than several seconds. I ended up being told there were six spots that would need fillings. Not all the spots seemed to match what she'd been watching on the xray and many areas were determined from visual inspection alone (of the 6, one had air blown on it and another was poked with an instrument). I was given almost verbatim the same set of lines lines (including the same joke) I'd heard her just give another patient in the hall about being adult enough to handle taking care of them multiple at a time. She was already standing at this point and on her way out the door when I questioned how I ended up with 6 cavities when my mouth isn't really bothering me at all right now. She mentioned something vague about how some of the spots had been monitored in the past but have progressed, without any conversation about whether my eating/brushing habits had changed or what might have caused such a drastic shift in the condition of my teeth. When I went to check out, I was given a printout detailing the filling schedules I could choose from and a total of almost $1200 *after insurance*. All of this felt completely out of the blue; I felt steamrolled with no chance to ask questions, and the price tag was definitely more than I was planning to spend on teeth that feel largely functional right now. Im fine that she used the same lines on two patients in a row; I get when you work with lots of people, you tend to fall into patterns of speaking. What was concerning is that it was so frequent for her to find so many cavities in someones mouth as to need to use these same lines and jokes about filling multiple in one sitting. Maybe dentists don't actually need to poke around all that long to determine the presence of cavities vs. staining or whatnot, but I certainly would have been put at ease to have a bit more explanation before she left the room, especially as someone new to her who doesn't already have trust built. I will not be getting any of my teeth filled at this time and, unfortunately, now feel the need to find a new dentist for a second opinion.
