Staff has been so helpful and caring as my mother transitioned from assisted living to memory care here. Their activities staff is especially wonderful - - they are doing their best all the time to keep her engaged, introduce new strategies for enrichment, and to support my mother.

This morning, as I was tending to my friend in her final weeks, days and hours, a senior staff member, in a supervisory role asked me, Did you even check on her? in a most unprofessional manner. Its terribly disappointing after losing someone, having turned your life upside down for weeks, caring for them, only to be treated so dismissively by some administrator of a for-profit enterprise. I would be surprised if my friends passing had not been both hastened and made significantly more unpleasant by the staffs failure to provide her with a necessary medication for around 10d because they were waiting for pharmacy to send it. No attempt was made to inform family (present every day, most of the day, or caregivers, present whenever family was unable to be present, or hospice, that they were unable to obtain the medication). The patients resulting low hormone levels are known to commonly cause reversible dementia, surely something none of us want to experience, and I know both my friend and her family found this extremely upsetting, not least because these symptoms induced by their lack of care resulted in their decision to threaten the family with kicking her out. Needless to say, this caused significant distress to my friends family, but then my friends state of mind, low on hormone, was such that she had difficulty eating, drinking, taking her meds and most ADLs, spiraling to the end of life for a woman with a beautiful compassionate, kind and giving spirit, a woman I was proud to have been an advocate for abused and neglected children (CASA) with. nb I dont say these things lightly, as I expect CC will ban me (as historically, they have either threatened or actually thrown out residents whom they preferred to no longer deal with) for having spoken the truth, thereby affecting my livelihood as a caregiver. Of course it would be preferable if this were a learning opportunity.

This community is a beautiful location. People often confuse senior living with nursing homes , they are not one in the same. Please people do your research on the different levels of senior living. Be aware of terminology. Be aware of the amount of care that is provided. Independent senior living is just that. Independent. Supportive/assisted means minimal assistance is provided such as a standby for a shower or medication reminder. However medications are not administered. The above are NOT "skilled " or "nursing home"and can not provide that level of care. In an assisted living an AED is not required. Please Google for the proper level of care your loved one may require.
