I award of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy (IBOP) five (5) stars. I begin with a disclaimer that I am a physician and am regulated by them and have limited experiences working with them (which I attribute to the deterrent effects of our being compliant). However, I feel that I can write an objective review based on a limited scope of experience working with them. Some background is I proudly run a free clinic that serves in multiple states permanent residents who do not qualify for public aid; the Idaho Falls Employment Health Clinic, PLLC (also known as IFEHC, PLLC). As a free clinic, IFEHC, PLLC used to have a large volume telephone as well as patient queries about controlled substances. While we always respected privacy rights, we also always cooperated fully with regulators such as the DEA and the state boards of pharmacy. I found the IBOP employees with whom I spoke (including at least one compliance officer) helpful in addressing these issues, including providing guidance on using the new prescription monitoring software. IBOP gives the impression of being well-organized. Possibly even more important is that the policies have been effective deterrents. I hope everyone reading this review notices I talk about the problem my clinic "used to" (i.e., the past tense) have. I believe word has spread among drug seekers that while my clinic is empathetic, my clinic does not enable abusers. I believe it is for this reason (i.e., deterrent effect) that I actually have drastically diminishing experience working with IBOP since we have a drastically diminishing volume of calls querying about controlled substances. Based on that indicator (i.e., drastically reduced call volume inquiring about controlled substances, I can confidently state that it has become clear to the public how seriously my clinic takes the issue of controlled substance abuse. I would encourage any prescribers, including pharmacists, reading this review to be compliant, because I can speak to it first hand that these policies are effective at deterring drug seeking behaviors. If we all work together to avoid enabling drug seekers, it is my professional judgment that we can help substance abusers receive the help they need. I conclude with a few more comments and caveats. Since I have seen reviews by physicians of other boards and a precedent has been set, I cautiously wrote the above within my declared scope. My declared limited scope means this review should not be construed as weighing in on any legal disagreements with prescribers. Other than as stated above (i.e., that I am regulated by IBOP); at this time, there are no other pertinent disclosures of which I am aware. If I become aware of them, I will update accordingly. D.M. Boren, M.D., Medical Director of Idaho Falls Employment Health Clinic, PLLC.
