    In 2015 (I was 65 at the time) I flew to the mainland for my first hip replacement. It was successful but required nights in the hospital and weeks away from Maui - so I put off addressing my second hip far too long. Happily, two friends shared their great experience right here at home with Maui Orthopedic Institute. I feel so fortunate. No hospital stay; home in my own bed the same day as surgery. The Doctor and staff were wonderful. My recovery has exceeded my hopes. I am ocean swimming, hiking, and even dancing hula again. Thank you!

    Being a patient and having to rely on others is not something that I enjoy doing. As a physician who has now become a patient requiring major surgery, having a doctor and surgeon who is skillful, reliable, and thoughtful about his patients gives me confidence which eases some anxiety about the procedure and encourages me to become a better patient. I followed Dr. Thielen's recommendation and instructions. I went into the surgery center in the morning and was home the same day that afternoon. The operation went very well, and it's my job now to get back to full recovery mode. Thank you, Dr. Thielen.

    I highly recommend Dr Thielen and his team at Maui Orthopedic Institute. They provided me with friendly, professional care when I fractured my wrist, and I feel relieved knowing there is such a knowledgeable physician on island if ever there is a need in the future.

    I was referred to Orthopedic Institute to have my shoulder examined. Upon calling, they claimed to have called numerous times to make an appt for me. According to my call log, I only received two calls which I wouldn't consider numerous times. After a demanding work schedule, I was able to call back to make an appointment. Jessica their "office worker" had failed to tell me she was working remotely which was discovered upon the sound of a child constantly screaming in the background. This seem to make her lose focus while trying to schedule my appointment. I then asked to speak to someone else since her child was a disruption. I waited close to 10 min when Jo the "Office Manager" replied. I explained that Jessica seem to be distracted in helping me. Instead of apologizing for the disruption. She instead felt the need to defend Jessica by saying "Jessica is one of our most valued workers..." Jo then became curt and unhelpful. Then proceeded to tell me that I needed to call another office for Xrays taken of my neck which they didn't need because it was my shoulder that was the issue and they had the MRI results. I then asked why did they bother calling me to make an appointment if they needed more info? Jo then gave an illogical answer which came across as a form of passive aggressive retaliation because I questioned her incompetency. According to the reviews, Maui Orthopedic Institute may be the best orthopedic specialists on the island but their office staff is the worse I've experienced but it is good to know that they have their co-worker's best interest. Too bad they could car less about the well being of patients. To the Office manager other than Jo, please provide your workers with customer service training. Also if you have a remote worker, do let callers know you are working from home. Many companies do this. It's unprofessional having to hear a screaming child in the background that is a work distraction. Due to this extra step of having to forward xrays of my neck, I couldn't schedule my appointment which didn't make any sense why they bother to call me in the first place to make an appointment. A very big inconvenience. Jo is clearly an office Karen who feels the need to wield some kind of glorified office manager power.
