My experience with KT Protection was a mixed bag. So.e thi is are good but there is another that is tragic...I walked into KT because I was angry that the very large security company that employed me full time had yet to pay me for work done months ago. The little bit of money they shaved off my check, if it happened for thousands of workers, would give that company a bit of "free" money. Only the low status guards would take the loss, but no one judged as important. One of the higher upside, let's call him C., commiserate, and vowed that I would be treated with respect. Since I was currently working and had a guard card, I was hired on the spot. The next day was orientation. I heard exciting information from M. He told me and the other new hire, a college student, that we would never be paid less than $16/hrs out of respect. KT was an industry leader in raising g the pay rates for Honolulu guards and other companies were following their example. KT would support my professional development. For example, I wanted to learn more about being a private detective. Just let KT know! Moreover, there were travel opportunities. There were guards in Maui at that time, just weeks after the fires, and if I wanted to start making real money by working in a mobile capacity I should let them know. And if there was ever an error in pay, the person who made the mistake would find their own pay check shortly by the amount I was owed. Interestingly, the aspects that were not touted in the training were really the strengths. I was trained at every site when I went for the first time by an MOD, Manager On Duty (I think). The stand out trainers were the former police officer, the two guys who work at night, and a young woman still in her 20's and already a leader, plus another guy, G., who really took time to give me the extra training I requested (even on Christmas Day 2023!). I hope they will see this review and use it in their resumes should the need arise. The xperience doing the work is pretty good, especially if you like support. But if you want to get paid what was promised, well, you better not ask about pay rates. It's like KT envies their Uber large competitor, a company with a reputation for screwing workers. I saw it on my first paycheck when money was deducted to pay for my "guard card," the colloquial term for Hawaii security guard employee license. But I already had a card! Obviously any deduction was ot being sent to the state because the state would've kicked it back. The money was going to whomever. In response to my complaint, on the next paycheck I saw the second half of the guard card fee deducted. I made repeated trips to the office and phone calls. Once I was told that the owner himself was in town and would personally handle the $200 refund. That didn't happen. I got my money back a month after it was deducted. I finally asked, so who is getting $200 taken out of their check? Can I speak to the trainer who ran the orientation to find out? I admit that my penchant for sarcasm does not endear me to the people I target. But it wasn't the sarcasm that made me a persona non grata. It was my refusal to work for $15/hr. I would get calls to see if I could go in right now. I knew it was standard to offer up to $22/hrs for last mi uterequests. When I asked about this rate over the phone, I heard D., the one who is in charge of payroll and the like, speak up. I don't think he knew he was audible over the phone. I heard him use a flat , dismissive tone, and he snapped, "tell her no." I heard how he sounded when it was thought I couldn't hear. When I went to the office about my $200 refund, I saw C., " I hear you want more money to work if we call."My days were numbered. I wanted what everyone got, without being guilt tripped for asking the pay rates. KT has the chance to empower people who may not know about making sure their pay is correct. Instead they make it clear you shouldn't ask. It is tragic that people who could uplift and encourage do the opposite.
