When youre looking for legit Japanese goodies to treat yourself or give as gifts, this is place to come to. Whenever I come to Kahala Mall, I make a beeline to this standalone kiosk to check out the latest offerings. With locations in Japan, New York and California, Minamoto specializes in wagashi, Japanese confections made with seasonal fresh fruit. On the day after Girls Day, they were sold out of the strawberry mochi boxes, but thankfully they still had several Sakura treats to try. Heres what we tried in the order we sampled them: Sakura Goromo (Sakura Pancake): sweet bean paste, mochi and pickled cherry blossom leaf wrapped encased taco style in a pink pancake similar in texture to the Ethiopian bread injera but not as chewy. It was the most IG worthy, but there were more flavorful treats in the bunch. Ouka Shigure: steamed flour and egg yolk cake filled with cherry blossom infused white bean. Very delicate flavor, with a small cherry blossom on top. Sakura Mochi: this was a flavor bomb, due to the salted cherry blossom leaves wrapped around mochi rice and sweet red bean paste. My fave of the bunch. Beni Hogyoku: my second fave, glad I ended the tasting with this sweet, soft mochi encasing white bean paste and a whole cherry that was pickled in sugar. I gravitate toward the mochi, but Im sure the baumkuchen cakes are just as amazing.

You can buy Japanese sweets. The Hawaiian-style rainbow waffel is interesting.
