I miss seeing Haleakala and Mauna Kahlwai (the west Maui mountains) every day going to work, so when I moved to ATL I was happy to know that Stone Mountain was only a short drive away, along with access to the Appalachian range of course further North. There's always a lot to do and see at Stone Mountain. I go here regularly with my clients to walk and picnic, but there are endless options to fill a day or even weekend.
The museum is interesting, telling of how the mountain was formed and about its dark Klan history before GA state purchased the land in 1958. There's even a little mini theater where you can watch a short documentary if that's more your style of learning.
The sky lift is definitely worth a ride, at least once, especially if you don't want to do the walk up trail. It's a fun way to see everything without taxing your knees as much! From the top of the mountain, when you get out, you can see Buckhead, Midtown, and Downtown ATL skylines which is pretty cool as I have not been able to go anywhere else and see these three all at once. The ride was smooth the one time I went, and although it seemed short it was worth it.
