Just want to inform those who are in search of a criminal lawyer to ask as many questions as possible and to know that the final outcome more than likely will not be exactly as what the lawyers present to you or your family. The end result seems trickery in that the judge more than likely will give more time during the sentencing phase. And during this phase, my son who was represented by this attorney, my son said, this attorney walked out of court and didn't say goodbye to him or wish him any best wishes during his long prison sentence. Also, this firm should be more clear on how the plea-deal process works--that it is setup more like a Bench trial with the judge having the final say on how much time the accused will have to serve. Also, this firm should have practice sessions with the client before court on how to respond to the judge in court or better yet, advise the client that he/she has a constitutional right to plead the 5th and not speak at all as by doing so, the client may cause more harm to his/her case. If one takes a plea deal--then , in my family's opinion, there is no further need to explain or answer any questions about the case; otherwise, the client may piss the judge off and get more time. The whole process seems like a game of chess--gambling with your loved one's life! If I had known that the plea-deal process was actually like a trial , I would not have missed my son's court date for nothing in the world--I thought it would be a matter of my son signing paperwork, but I was definitely wrong. Family members, show up to your loved one's plea deal court date because, it is actually a trial with the judge, a Bench trial. And the judge will ask, "Where is your family?" Know that your presence makes a world of difference.

Katie Elwart handled four legal cases for us over the last two years. She has been extremely effective in litigating our cases. Her communication has been excellent as she took extra time to let us know how things were going during each case. She was persistent on our behalf and had some big wins for us occur. I highly recommend Katie to others. She will exceed your expectations!

Katie was a FANTASTIC resource and lawyer for my unfortunate divorce case. She was recommended by a trusted friend and felt like one from the beginning! She was direct, intelligent, and comforting through a hard process. When going through an emotional process, it helps greatly to have a knowledgeable and confident lawyer to handle the unknown. Without a second thought, Katie will be my first call in any legal matters in the future.

Katie represented me in a most professional manner and won my case against the State out of the Fulton County courts. She did all the necessary legwork to collect information and contact witnesses/support for me; and she was very thorough about it all. In the court room she handled the ADA and Judges questions extremely well and had incredibly strong points and questioning of her own. I am very happy to have been represented by her. It was a genuine pleasure watching her work in the courtroom.

Pam, I appreciate that you are very sad about the situation that your son found himself in and the consequences that he is facing. However, please remember that, prior to your son's guilty plea hearing, I met with you, your mother, his aunt, his uncle and his father, at my office for nearly two hours, answering everyone's questions and explaining the process. And, that was not our only in person meeting that we had, even though your family hired me just one month before his case was called into trial. Additionally, this does not include the MANY hours I spent at the jail with your son, preparing him for court and for his hearing. Your statements about my lack of preparation for the hearing are simply inaccurate. On the day of his plea, I think in the stress of the moment, he must have forgotten that I did wish him well before I left court. I also understand the regret you may feel about choosing to skip court, which was not something that I advised you to do. I'm grateful he had some family there to support him. Unfortunately, the judge did not agree with the district attorney's recommendation or mine, given the difficult facts in your son's case. I wish you and your family the best going forward. Hopefully, you'll take some comfort in knowing that I was still able to obtain a sentence for your son that was ten years less than any of the recommendations that his previous attorneys had negotiated.Best, Katie
