Former site of the mission founded in 1801 by the Moravian Brethren of Salem SPRINGPLACE MISSION Heading south from this mission, founded in 1801 by the Moravian Brethren of Salem, N. C. The first school among the missions continued until 1833 and contributed much to its notable advancement ., many leaders of the Cherokee Nation were taught here. One was Elias Boudinot, later editor of The Cherokee Phoenix. The work begun here was not abandoned with the forced removal of the Cherokees, but was moved to New Springplace, Oklahoma. A place where you can breathe history, the old wooden fence from an earthquake hundreds of years ago.
