I have dyed my hair black for a very long time, box dye color from Sallys, but would just do my roots and it grew out. At the beginning of February I got my entire head dyed professionally by another stylist at the salon. Yesterday I went back because I wanted to lighten my hair to a medium brown so it can continue to grow out. I have done it many times before and went into it knowing Id need some lightener or bleach. Long story short, due to my budget only allowing for 2 hours, they insisted on just using a color remover that takes 45 mins, which is what made my hair look like the photo. Then follows up with one part all soft, shampoo, and 2 parts 30 vol developer with no lightener assuming that would touch it when a color remover wouldnt. I moved forward because I was told by another stylist this will at least get me to dark brown. After 10 mins of me under the heater they said nothing changed and said there was nothing else they could do. Told me Id either have to grow it out as is or cut my hair. Blow dried me and that was it. I was not expecting a drastic change without lightener. I understand my budget constraint played a part, but even as someone who isnt a professional, i would think if a remover doesnt touch it then some type of lightener would be required. In two hours that is all that changed. I most certainly would not be okay with letting a client walk out the salon like this and at least tried to make it look presentable. I accepted it and left because I was on the verge of tears and couldnt say more. Olivia did give me an hour discount and 10% discount card which I am grateful for. She did what she was told and she tried. But no one should ever walk out looking worse than when they came in. I dont need anything to happen from this. This is just so others know. If your staff does not think they can do something confidently, they shouldnt touch the client to begin with. I paid, with discount, about $125 to look worse than before.
I would also like the manager to be aware that their staff makes commentary about clients within earshot. Commentary about how I shouldnt have expected a difference in a day unless I wanted to look like a splotchy mess and wish they had a pumpkin or something to represent that for clients to see? Someone comes to you for their hair, something that is one of the first things people notice, at least be a bit more compassionate. I wasnt asking to go platinum blonde. Im not an idiot. If youre going to talk about a client, do it where they cant hear you. Another stylist even told me after I said my hair has lifted before, that the hormones of me being pregnant and there being no change to my black ends can very much have to do with being pregnant. Ive never heard of pregnancy affecting your ends. That is not a thing. Years of black box dye needs lightener, even I know that. I wish I had more confidence to of spoken up for myself better. Just need more professionalism all around.
